you'v seen how we do them with a chainsaw thought id show you how we do it on the lucas.

being a sunday, and i have an order of posts to cut tommorow i thaught id take the time today to take a few pics.

I made up a frame with castor wheels on it, they are spaced so there is about a 3" gap between the 6" wheels, the wheels have breaks on them to hold the log in the right place.

Line the blade up with the center of the log in horizontal this will only need to be done once on each log.

Make a scoring cut along the edge to make sure its lined up. Then cut to about 1" of the center of the log.

Release the breaks, roll the log bout 6",

Make a scoring cut, to make sure the post will be big enough, then cut to within about 1" of the center.

Continue this process until your all the way round.

I then pick the log up with the bobcat, take it away from the mill, rais it up high and drop it,

You end up with a nice lot of posts, almost no labor, and its fast.

before i made the rollers we jsut used a couple of logs with V cut in them, the log would roll around in it ok, but it wasnt as good as the rollers.

this is fast and easy, you barely raise a sweat, each cut only takes about 20 seconds about 5 seconds to roll the log, a bloke working the bobcat feedin billets and removing /splitting posts, is kept buisy all day.

Very ingenuous!!!  This method would also make columns or D logs.

I can see making caster for my mill frame, just slide them on the rail tops.

only problem with this method with the peterson type mills where you cant move each end individualy,  as it lines up with the bottom of the log not the center.

the best way to do it on one of them mills would be to have a splike to attach it to the center of the log like a wood lathe.

Dig in an automotive floor jack underneath one of the caster ends and shim up that end.

Wished I had pics of a turner I seen years back under a Mobile Demention mill They had two rollers with 1/2" spiles in them about 18"long Set up like above but with a shaft conecting two rollers on one side with a hyd motor turning shaft. They were rolling 4 and 5 ft logs 18 ft long with it.This way they got all the clear wood off outside then chipped cant

Thats a neat trick Weisy. My dad used to split cedars into what he called stakes using wedges. He would have been impressed with your way of doing it.
Life is too short or my list is too long, not sure which. Dec 2014

we used to split these posts with wedges, most are done now with a chainsaw. this is less labour intensive.

Thanks mate that caster idea is a ripper, I've already marked it down on the 2 do list, Supa-Cheap-Auto's got cheap casters.

You guys were talking about a lathe style turner, my friend built a rotisserrie deal to roll over a car he is restoring.  He used an old gearbox off a pivot wheel on the end and you can flip the car round and round with one finger on a 1/2" ratchet, I would think the same would work for big logs.  I also told him I was going to hook up an orbit motor to it, put a couple racing seats/harnesses in it and sell rides :D :D

Ok it looks like a great idea and all, but why do you use pie shaped posts?  And more importantly where do you get a pie shaped hole drill??? ;D

Which side of the post do you typically attach the wire or boards to?

My buddy Jeff is picking me up some casters tomorrow.  I am going to slide them on my bunks just like the way the manual log dogs work.  I will setup two of the caster to have variable height to account for log tapper (just simple pins, or a stop bolt).

split posts have always been used in australia for fural fencing, origionaly it would have been cos, tehy would cut a tree down split the posts out and carry them along the line, dig the holes and put them in, all by hand. long before sawmills.

i know of places that have 1000s of meters of split post with split rail fencing, that was put up over 100 years ago, the land needed clearing and wire was  to dear. time was worth nothing.

we drill a 12" hole, put the post in and ram around it, some blokes cut a point on them, drill a 4" hole and knock them in with a gizmo on a tractor.

tehy are normaly use for wire fences, the posts are put in so the backs (barked edge) is accross the fence so the wire goes threw the back and out the pointy end. when putting rails on you screw them to the back, so the posts go in the other way round.

if you have a mill that you cant adjust eh height on you could make one end adjustable sideways, so the log sits down lower whn the wheels are moved apart.

I'm thinking with huge logs, you lift one side of the Lucas frame out of the way, and center the log, and put the side back on... Or do you unload the log, and assemble the frame around it, and then start cutting.

With your bobcat, are you able to lower the logs into the 'cradle'? without having to move the frame around?  Figure it is...

My grandpa split thousands of post oak logs by hand over the years.  Part of my place was on his land, and I've got half a mile of his original fence alongside the road.  Those posts are still hard enough to bend staples.  (Learned quick to hold em with pliers before hammering).  All of the nails are in the flat sides... the small amount of sapwood on the round side would rot off, the heart wouldn't.

weisyboy

the bobcat will reach streight over the rail and place the log in the cradle, and pick it back up agin no trouble.

with big logs (ones the bobcat cant lift) over 1 ton or so, we wouldnt be splitting so i have my bolsters in, we just wind the rails up ad poke it in underneath.

easy as that.
