Now that I am spending more time logging and sawing I have need of some type of truck . I will take about  50k bf  to the local timber yard this year , and I have been paying  75 per 1000 for hauling . That is about  $3750 .00    I also  will transport 1000  Ties about  100 miles .  That will cost  maybe $ 2000.00 .  When  I figure  tags , Insurance , fuel etc . I might save  $3000 if I had my own truck . Not a big pay back but the convenience would be nice .  Im thinking  a flatbed  under 26,000  GVW  . I have found 2 that I am looking at  any Input  would be very much appreciated .

1986 Int   1654 with  6.9  and  14.5  bed  I think it is a old  Ohio DOT  truck with  48 k miles .  For  $3750

here is a fact you mite not know international makes the frame for ford . ford adds the cab. the ih with 6.9 later became a 7.3 . not enought power hasnt been made in yrs. if you find one with a 444e . good motor mostly the same as 90's ford power stroke. 5.9 cummins good not much hp. better choice. what do they have for transmisson???? need at least 5sp 2sp rear. brakes? air is wayyyyyyyyy better. and cheapest to mantain

Ohio_Bill

Thanks very much for your input and advice . The Ford has a 6 speed  and the IH has a 5speed  two speed rear .  Both have hyd breaks .

Good idea to keep the weight under CDL requirements. It can get expensive once you get over 26,000. Also keep in mind that with that size truck you will be limited to about 1000 to 1500 bd. ft. per load depending on type of wood. Make sure you figure expenses for the number of trips you need to make to get your wood to the mill.

I have an f800 with the 5.9 Cummins. Could use  2 spd rear end    (pretty hilly around here), but it works for me. I put a knuckleboom crane on it and can carry about 1200-1500 bd ft of logs and much more lumber. Best thing is it gets about 12mpg.

lumberjack48

I would slip a tag axle under it and put a small loader on it, like a Barko 40, then i think the truck would make wages. Then you haul 2500 to 3000 bd ft., and use it for sorting wood ect, sweet little truck.

a tag axle with hydr. breaks???????????? good luck with one. 1970 all over again. plus you would a cdl

Update on my truck Quest  .   I purchased a 1991 Ford  CF 7000  20 ft bed with a 6.6 Ford   eng    from a leasing company that had owned it since it was new .  Drove it home  over 100 mi and it did fine  , Ill get some better pictures tomorow .

Bill,

I have one similar to yours

I bought a 2002 FC-80 w/ air brakes, A/C, engine break, heated mirrors, air seat, cruise, 5.9, 5sp w/2 rear. 18' striaght frame, PTO, 140,000 good tires , CHEAP. 33,000 gvw, so CDL is in my future, Looks just like yours. I have a 14' dumping duece bed and a 8000lb Haib to go on it. I love the space effiency of the cab forward. I may put 385 or 425 tires on the front for dispersing loads while in yards grabbing logs. Here are some pics

Yeah, I love it too, thought about super singles or 425 singles in the rear, capacity is an issue though and supers only come in certain tread patterns. Don't want to speed as much in tires as I spent on the whole truck :D

The smallest white and blue truck w/ the crane extended over the cab has a HIAB 035 like I am putting on my 550. Lifts 5500 next to the cab.

Ironwood, can't you license your truck for 26,000 to get around a cdl? Just curious,  I'd just get the CDL anyhow.

I have heard that was an option, but had not looked into it yet. I would like that extra 7000# capacity. I have heard also however, that what ulitimately matters is the door jamb GVW not your plate. We'll see.

I have been "testing" out the engine and it is not plugged in and has started first time everytime to 12 degrees F. So, must be in fairly good shape.

super singles are 445'sabout $750 for a tire $750 for a wheel they wont last as long as duals nor stand more weight but they are a bit lighter. when i had trucks running over the road we pulled trailers with them. one goes flat your done and many times it takes out the wheel also

Is that a 5.9 cummins in it Ironwood? With only 140,000 miles you should be good. I think the only way you can hurt those engines is overheating them.
Too many irons in the fire

Ironwood

Yes a 5.9. Some other trucks had 3126 Cat's but I have a buddy who's a mech. and he said to diagnose a Cat you gotts have their computer and that they are always changing the read codes, a Cummins while a chip driven engine, can be more easily read if oyu have an issue.

On the 425 steer tires, I found two brand new Continentals at a backwoods scrap yard for $150 each (I have not bought them yet), and one buddy gave me a 12" wide steel hub pilot rim I just need to find another one then I will move on the tires.

Things are on hold here until the $$$ gets better and the weather is better. I am working on a 550 "little logger truck" right now. I need to get back in my cash flow groove and stop messing w/ trucks :D

Ironwood, I wish I could  hang out with you for a few days and see some of your "connections", you find some cool stuff ;) I take it your 5.9 is a 24 valve, computerized? Cat large truck engines, 3406, C13, C15 have solid reputations, but the smaller truck engines I've been told to stay away from by many sources. I think you got the right mill in yours ;)
Too many irons in the fire

Ironwood

Yes, ISB, and 24 valve and I think it does have a rudimentry puter on it.

Cat's w/ a solid rep, YES, but there are future issues with long term parts/support given they are no longer making engines.

cat engine parts will not be hard to find. a lot of the truck notors are used in equipment. a c12 or 13 is a far cry from a great motor. almost all of cats acert motors were trouble. when 04 emissions regs came about cat wasnt ready so to sell motors they paid a $10000 fine on each bridge engine as they called it. i know someone that bought 18 freight shakers with c13 ran them 2 yrs. and dumped em at a loss. some only made 6months between inframes. terriable fuel mileage. the little cummins is a good little lite mid range engine. not biased againt cat ...i have 2 ...2 jd...2cummins....2 detriot.....3ih....1 ford....1koubta

Ironwood

That sounds like a collection.  :D.

Yeah, I think I will  like the Cummins, I drove it a few miles from a friends house (he had towed it there) The shift linkage was sloppy so you could not get all the gears and reverse without a "ground helper" to tap it in. And no one would run beside me or strap themselves to the frame to get me into high gear. It was a late night ride w/ an escort vehical.  ;)

3208.........good???????????just before they stoped making em they were ..ok tubro one was the best. half that engine..3204 was used in 215 and d3. sleveless engine just like your 5.9

Ironwood

3208, I was told they were powerful and effiecent by several mechs here locally. Incorrect? Just trying to get my education.

A 3208 is pretty good in a 2 ton truck, my Grandpa had one in a Ford F7000, 5+2, it had lots of power and got really good mileage. However, anything more than 33,000gvw they are the most gutless noisy things ever. There were a lot of Tandem and Tri-axle dump trucks powered( I use that term loosely) by the 3208 from the mid 70's through the late 80's or so, I have had the "privelege" of driving many of them. It was a cruel joke :( That engine was also used in a lot of equipment, I got to run some of that too. Double drum steel asphalt rollers where you got to sit right next to the 3208 running at 2800 rpms all day long, think of a tornado going through a marble factory that's probably about the same sound :) Actually, except for the noise, they are a decent motor in a light medium duty application. They just got put lots of places they should have never been. If I had to drive a tandem axle dump truck with a 5.9 cummins in it I would probably hate those too, but a 5.9 sure is dandy in my pick up ;)
Too many irons in the fire

Ironwood

I will most likely leave the exsisting 5.9 in place as it will only be used occasionally, I do have a chance at a 8.1 or 8.2 Cummins (dont remember exact #, but 8.?) for $1000, it is still in a truck so could hear it run, blah blah. I dont need another project.  :-X

The 5.9 will work great for you Ironwood, why would you want to switch it? Cummins make an 8.3, probably what you're thinking of. A 5.9 could be a bit short on power at 33,000, but with the 5+2 you should have plenty of gears. My work truck has a 5.9, Ford F700 with a landscaping box. We put an approx. 800 gallon water tank the bed, and pull a 14K tilt bed utility trailer with a 10K machine on it. It does just fine, and that must be getting around 33K altogether. Or for another example, my Dodge pickup with a 5.9 will run down the road at 65mph if I want with my skidder on the gooseneck, and that is pushing 30K total. There is a 8.1 or 8.2 detroit out there in two ton trucks, it's a four stroke. It's supposed to be a real piece of garbage, stay away from that one.
Too many irons in the fire

dont buy an 8.2 detriot you wont like it

Ironwood

I think it is an 8.3, like I said I wont be using it daily anyhow. It will be summer before it gets on the road.
