far left just outa the pic is split posts, they are sawn but once apon a time they were split with wedges and maul, glad i dotn do that anymore.

all from 1 tree, 3 logs it had a 8" pipe up the guts to.

its all new england blackbut,

3x3 make good line posts instead of star pickets, stronger and cheaper. good to cut to.

how do you market those wooden posts? is there a market that buys those or individual that orders those or are you sawing them for someone. inquiring minds want to know.

i dont get the opportunity to saw many fence posts. almost all wire fences here areput on steel T posts and the popular thing to make corners out of is 3 to 8 inch pipe drove in the ground.  pc

if i was to sell them to a timber buyer, i would get about $4 each for the 4x3s.

by selling them retail i can get $11 each for the 4x3s, and between $10 and $16 for the splits.

these are all for an order, for a horse fence, along with 240 rails.

wooden posts are usualy used in fences here as our hardwoods last a long time in the ground.

there are fence posts on our property that my grandfather put in over 100 years ago. and the fences still stand up fine.

i have a few adds online and word of mouth brings a few orders in.

oh its me that did a good job, its only the mills fault when something goes wrong.

do you just make split posts out of smaller logs them? do all the split posts you make have bark on the back ?  pc

split posts are a wedge from the outside towards the center of the log.

the have a 6" back (along the outside of the tree) and a 4" belly(from the outside to the inside), the point is trimmed off if its longer than 4" or so.

traditionaly splits were taken from hollow logs, as they were easier to split, i normally do splits from logs about 12 - 14" in diameter. but have used logs up to 3'

somtimes you can get a backed off post from the centers of the outised ones on bigger logs.

to do this you make your wedge twice as wide as it should be, split the point off adn thsi is one post, then split the rest in half.

Go on Carl educate 'em on our fences down here!!! and ya milling area looks nice an tidy mate 8)

Doin splits on the Lucas is quite a good use for the mill, if you are set up for it and do a run like Carl has done above, you can get through a very nice payday for a days work on splits ;D

Now I know/see how you "split" posts. I'd call it sawing rails, but that'd be me.
Split would be with an axe, maul, and wedges (with a glut or two available).

Some of the locals around here have hyd splitters with a long bed to split oak for split-oak fence posts. Then they have a rig for sharpening these posts similar to the buzz saw.

These posts are then driven/pounded in with an 8# maul.

Thanks for the video. I'd suggest your back will let you know when you've done it that way long enough. :)

they were always split, we still split them until about 3 years ago. when we ran out of good splitters and had to start cutting.

blokes have made all sorts of contraptions to make them but a chainsaw or a lucas is still the best way.

that is if there not good splitters.

some blokes will point them, bore a small hole 4" diamiter, and them drive them in with an attachment on the tractor that drops a 500kg weight on top of them over and over.

we bore a 12" diameter hole and ram the dirt back around, our fences are always much straighter than any driven fence.

if i have the bobcat or loader handy ill put them up on a coupla logs so i dotn have to bend,

dad split posts up until last year he is 84 now.

there are a lot of old blokes out there splitting like this, oldest i saw was a bloke out west he was 86 and split with a 395xp, and had an old chamberlin tractor for snigin and loading. he cut the nicest looking posts i have ever seen, all exactly the same size and backed of really nice. he lived in an old chook house on a 10 000 acre property. the owners got $6 and he got $2 , room and board for each post. hed been doing posts his whole life, left home when he was 13 and went walkabout until he found this property.
