what angle can a standard pto shaft be run at?

to keep my winch drum centered the pto angle would be to mutch i think. without having the winch hangin way out the back,

i dont wanna here any of that go hydrolic crap.

how do the commercial winches overcome this.

A drive shaft angle of +/- 10 degrees is shown as a design goal.  Since this is a mechanical engineering paper is it safe to assume thats the correct range of motion?

I don't really know.

i had in my mind that it was sompthing like 30 deg shaft angle max.

maby i will have to go verticle drum.

1. I wouldn't think a standard u joint would live very long at that angle, might consider CV joints instead, they are more angle tolerant.
2. If you mount vertically, won't the cable tend to bunch up at the lower end of the drum? Some winches do have a cable guide that is geared to the drive and moves back and forth to keep the cable wound evenly.

you could mount a short shaft in pillow blocks in-line with your pto.  then heavy roller chain from the shaft to your winch.  added benefit would be a chance adjust your speed with different sprockets. al

The winch i use is set up like this

The chain and sprockets turn all the time that the pto is in gear, there is a clutch disc in between the large sprocket and the winch drum, you turn the winch drum by pulling a leaver that turns a disc with three small rods in it that try to stand up as one side turns, this pushes the winch drum into the spinning large sprocket and causes it to turn.

It also has a break that stops the drum when you stop pulling on the cable, this is very important because with out it the cable will just ball up on the drum every time it is pulled out, the drum is stopped from turning while pulling logs by a pawl that drops in to a hole on the winch drum.

Also check this out there are more pics with descriptions.

I would lean towards the jack shaft idea myself this way you could also allow for running winch with winch lifted some also.
But desiite warning ;D ;D ;D Hyd motor adds option of power out as well (sorry can't help myself)

If you're bound and determined to stick with the pto definetly go with the jack shaft.  Bad things happen when u joints break under load and at high rpm :o

weisyboy

hydrolics are just power robbing nusances,

i thaught about a jack shaft, will have nother look this arvo.

Why do you think hydraulics are power robbing nuisances?

the efficiency of hydrolics is not good,

all it takes is 1 strat stick to bust a hose.

a pto shaft wont break to easily.

i can onlt get 11lpm of flow from the tractor, witch wont run a decent motor anyhow.

Not trying to cause trouble but I run an orbit motor on my carrage and stock Ford hyd pump is 4.5 gpm. To each their own but mine will be hyd driven I love the infinite speed and power out feature is neet at landing for slacking logs and winch line stays spooled on winch nicer Just me .25worth

dug this old beauty out the other day, didn't think it would go agin after being burnt i 3 bushfires. and sitting for the last 18 years.

took cover off (required the use of a 9pounder) and soaked it in oil/deisel mix for 2 days.

got the bearings out, $600 each and there is 5 of them, that would be mighty expensive winch.

so i soaked all the bearings in deisel overnight, and started attacking tehm with the oxy and wire brush this arvo, wile it was to hot to mill.

got most of them moving, rough but usable because of the slow speed.

teath had been stripped off the star wheels when a log hit a tree, thats why dad retired it off his truck.

nice worm drive, 6:1 ratio i reckon.

if i use this winch i can keep my pto angel down to 30 deg at its tightest.

if you put drive in middle it will work good  my issue is I want winch to work all the way down on foot or as high as 3pt will lift so drive line set up wont work fer me but this is what I skidd with

or this

I have home built winch for 2910 4X4 Ford but till they hit landing ground is way too wild fer wheel tractor

weisyboy

it should work right threw range of motion if iv done my maths right witch i probably havent.

iv gota have the drum in the center or pull will be off center and likely bend the 3pl.

its extreamly steep round here, to steep to drive a dozer anyware, we have a fiat AD10 and 415 c crawler dozers, they have to stick to the roads, or there gone, hence the need for a winch.

we have untill now been shooting the logs down, as apposed to winching them up. but we are getting into areas now we cant get roads in the bottom.

is that because of the beautiful rolling hills and scattered timber mostly untouched by urban sprawl or........
