This is my latest project.

It's a maple stump that was donated to me by Corley5   ;D ;D ;D

I just have to trim a little bit off to get it to swing.
I am planing on turning out the center and carving then sandblasting the rest.

If it doesn't fly apart  :o :o :-\ :-\

Why not just 1 pain free day?

Texas Ranger

That is one I would want armor on before I throw the switch.

Burlkraft

I just worked on it for a little bit and it is surprisingly well balanced!  ;) ;)

It is very dry and very hard end grain. There are also a few bark inculsions

No termite tool here.  :D  :D

Why not just 1 pain free day?

pigman

Be sure to start at about 1500 rpm. ;) That way it won't stall on the hard spots. :D
It's time to get a 3636 lathe so you can turn the big stuff.

I got another pile waiting here for ya  ;D :)

You're stumped?!?  I'm scared! :o

Based on your description it sounds like you're going to leave the outside pretty much alone.  Is that correct?  I hope so as that stump is almost too pretty to do anything with.  There is some great character in that thing.

Edit-Maybe this will work.  ;D

Ya Steve, but I wanted you to have a chance of having a safe outfit for your work.  :D :D

And Jill would probably appreciate it too.   :o

I thoroughly regret looking at that link. :o

Burlkraft

Nevermind Gary......That's just the way you get when ya been in the woods by yerself too long  ;D  ;D

Here's today's progress.......

Just starting to form the outer rim......

I got to lookin' at it and I decided a scatter shield was in order, Not to stop anything, but to give me a false sense of security  :D  :D

The rim is formed and the hollowing has begun

Down to about 5 1/2" deep and that's where we'll stop for today.

A good coat of  Pentacryl and I'll get back at it tomorrow.

This is probably the hardest piece I have done. Either that or I'm just gittin' old  ::) ::)
It's both spots that were hard a nails and others that were soft and punky
My hip and my hands just ache.
It sure looks like it'll be worth it!

On a sadder note.........

The tool is a Crown 3/8 Ellsworth Pro  It's made out of M5 HSS and seems to be kinda brittle.
I wonder if they will warranty it?  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D
I buy a lot of stuff from Woodcraft maybe I'll get lucky

I am just going to sandblast the outside.

Now I've really done it. Got Jeff's favorite picture posted again.  ::)

Patty, does Norm wear that outfit while running the lathe too? If he does, make sure he has his face shield on.  :)

Today's progress.....

Due to a dead battery in my camera you missed the first part of this, but it's just a hunk
of 3' maple slab that will end up 23 1/2" across.

I finished turning the bottom of the pedestal and rough sanded it on the outboard side of my lathe.
Then I put a large vacuum chuck on the inboard side and was able to finish turn and rough sand the top.

I got the bowl part of this to 6 1/2" deep. I did a lot of sanding and there is still hours to go yet.  :-\  :-\ I hate sanding! Then I turned a tenon on the bottom  of the bowl and turned a mortice in the pedestal. I will try to get the sandblasting done tomorrow while the weather is nice.
