Good day everyone......we have a piece of lumber from a railroad in Rhode Island that dates back 140+ years.  We are trying to identify it before we have it cut.  Is there anyone out there that would be able to tell using photos I've taken?

Thank you,

Gail in Rhode Island

Welcome to the Forum Gail. I bet if you post some pictures you'll soon find the answer you're looking for. I think the how-to thread on posting pictures is in the "Behind the Forum" topic of the Forum.

Can you get a clear photo of the end grain of a timber? Use a utility knife to make a fresh smooth cut on a spot and either scan it or use the Macro setting on the camera, then crop in down small to 500 pixels wide in your image software. The Java uploader will help reduce size, but doing it free hand with image software that comes with most scanners like HP's Image Editor for All-In-One Officejet G series Printers can do the trick and it's free. I don't know, if there are versions with other models or if the program is the same for all, with the drivers being different.

This link may have a tip or two for you.
