i knocked up this coffee table this arvo when i finally got some time in the workshop.

i know it was brought as a garden tree from some ware but not sure were.
its been declared a noxious weed here now due to the way it spreads.
so there not allowed to be planted and the council are telling people with them to cut them down.

We have what is known as camphor tree around here that is probably the same thing.  It is an exotic, but has been around so long most people think it is native.  A record breaking freeze killed off most of them in this immediate area in 1963, and they are just now making a comeback.  They're sprouting like weeds all over my place.

Looks like a nice grain to it. Is there any odor to it when working it?  Interesting design. ;D

Back in 1973, before I knew any better, I split up a big Camphor log for fire wood.  It was the year of the great fuel crisis and I would have burned most anything.   I didn't notice it while I was splitting and stacking it.  I guess that I got used to it.  But when I came home from work Monday afternoon, the entire neighborhood smelled like a Vicks VapoRub jar.

I wouldn't do that again, but I've found that wood turners love the stuff and so do some of the furniture makers.

weisyboy

smells really strong of campor. vics has camphrated oil in it.

burns really well we use it for kindling cos u can light the corner of a 4x2 with a match.

We use lighter pine for that, also called fat pine or just lighter... pine stumps or roots that accumulate sap after the tree is cut, then the sap dries, sucking more resin or rosin up and drying till you have what is mostly resin held together with a little pine wood.  Slivers of this stuff burn instantly, hot enough to start most any other kind of wood.  Made a bunch once for the winter fires, daughter's step-son was over for a holiday dinner and had a great time lighting the whole bunch in the fireplace- lots of good black soot to coat the chimney.

I find it interesting that, apparently because they are south of the equator, some of our more interesting members refer to a 2X4 as a 4X2; or maybe it's just the way you hold it when you measure? :)

That's spot on Carl  And also because we only went to the metric system only 44 years ago Super feet was the sawn measurement and Hopus was the Log measurement  ;) you have to be multi lingual when it comes to timber sizing some blokes come in saying i want some 8x2 4.8 meters long thats a 200mmx50mm 16' long fellas  ;) :D :D :D also the big number first rolls off your tounge  abit easier too i reckon

Im not too sure myself but i knew an old hardwood sawmiller down ere that yse to still talk in super feet and the way i took it it meant log volume before conversion Il suss it out as i have an old industry hand book that still talks in super and metric that ill dig out n have alook at  :o :) :)

Whats your Famiilys last name  ??? I worked in Palm View back in 01  for a bloke named Drew Wilkinson i operated a Kara master up there for a while untill the ex missus dragged me back down for another crack which didnt work out  anyway ::) i should have just stayed up there   :( as i was on a good wicket with him and he was abit upsett i cam home i think too i got my best run on a kara upthere in strait log to sawn timber on the single machine about 18 to 20 m3 sawn  per day in Slash Mate  ;) ;D 8) 8) I also know the Corbetts up in alls neck of the bush too they are a good family too Mate

I think they measure it that way just to torment the fellows that measure the narrow side first.  :D :D :D 8) Heck we can't even agree on the size of a gallon, so don't expect measuring lumber to be any easier to swallow. :D

Cool  ;) I was at the mill across the bruce hwy from the edahmogah pub  ;D Boral own it now and its just the treatment plant  ;)

Those Karas are the ant's paints in smaller logs 10 to 18 inch is the sweet spot for them for production  ;D 8)  but big logs slow you down abit as the biggest ive put through one was about 800mm 32" dia on a 44" saw freehanding the rest with the chainsaw  ;) :D

but like you said abit pricey for the small sawmiller there is a couple of blokes i know down here that have a Lucas and a Kara mill though  ;) i could get a tricked out F2000 for about $85000 which is about all you need ;)and i reckon the Slidetec's will give David the Kara rep here somthing to worry about at $65 to 75K au landed fully decked out they are anice looking mill too  ;)

backwoods sawyer

We have a related species called Myrtlewood that was even used as legal tender in the town of Myrtle point. I have seen these trees reach 8' across. The wood from the trees that grow inland seem to be more of a blond color. Where the rich minerals of the coastal valleys produces some very striking color variations across the width of a board, and defects in the tree will bring out the color in the wood.
This is very much a wood that is sought after by the art community.

Wow... that is some absolutely beautiful wood.  I would love to do some woodworking with that stuff.  Might not be easy to work, but the results would be so worth it.  There is nothing like beautiful wood like that.  Obtaining beautiful wood like that would in of itself make a sawmill worthwhile.

The Myrtlewood is a real nice wood to work with. I dries with out much issues, it plains out smooth, sands easily to 1500 grit if you want to go that far. Another wood that we have locally is Madrone I just set up to mill up a log truckload of it today. It takes a bit more to get it to dry with out the cells collapsing but makes a nice flooring.
