Do you fellows think it is a better idea? To log first and bid
the logs later, or ask for bids on the stump.  We want to do a timber stand improvement and pine plantation thinning. Which
way yields more income?  Any pros or cons either way?

Thanks for your input.

Are you a professional logger with all the necessary heavy  equipment and know the market value for all your potential. wood products?

Be aware of your logging costs to get the products to the landing. If you are not experienced in timber harvesting, sell the timber on the stump, but contact a professional consulting forester first for some advice.

You assume a lot more risk when hiring someone to cut and skid your trees and then selling the logs yourself. First, the risk of the logger improperly felling and damaging logs that still belong to you. Second, a disagreement can arrise on the measuring and grading of logs between you and the logger for his pay. Third, the risk that you are not as experienced or talented in selling logs on the market and you accept a lower price than is possible for the material. Finally, you may lose on the fact that a higher value-added buyer (sawmill or veneer buyer) could have paid you more for the standing trees than you could have reasonably gotten yourself selling the logs and subtracting the logging costs.

I sell all standing timber for my clients on the stump.
