the shear is less on maintaince! the saw head is not that much more, except with the teeth there expence and down time while changing.... of corse asuming your not asking about a harvester system cut to length? then its a total otherwise!!

i was thinking about getting a smaller excavator or bobcat around 75 hp for cutting pulpwood and was wondering which would be better the shear or saw

I'd look at a Bobcat S330 w/Shear.. Versitale machine since you can get a grapple to use in the landing and a Mulching head to clean up the Job after your done.

that is what i was thinking but the shear busts the butts of the logs a foot ot more up the tree :-[  but it wouldnt be cutting many sawlogs anyway because the trees are too top heavy

I haven't seen any shears used around here in years, the mills (both pulp & saw) basically forced the contractors to stop using them due to the extreme fibre damage. Put a piece of pulpwood that is split from a shear into a debarker and watch the lovely wood explosion.

Shears are still used around here by a few outfits.. Skid Steer, Morbark Woverines, Hydro-Ax and Timbco's out fitted with shears.. Its used mostly on Post and Pole material

I have seen alot of morbark wolverines for sale on the computer lately i would like to have one the look neat, similar to a bell i had a chance to get a bell but the guy that owns it is a good friend of mine and he said not to get over my head in mechanical harvesting and stick with the chainsaw, i cut mostly saw logs anyway so i would only need it for small logs and pulpwood anyway
