Jill got right on your question about turning some of that elm.

If it don't warp and crack it's gonna be a beauteeeeee   8)  8)  8)

Why not just 1 pain free day?

Reddog

Wow 8)

Well even if it does warp and crack, that is just part of the character of the piece. ;)
Can't wait to see how it finishes. :)

SwampDonkey

Epoxy the sucker and she won't move. ;D I like turning elm, but I always turned mine with the end grain on the chuck. I got a crack in one I turned, that was from dropping it before I got the epoxy on.  ::)

Jill has been busy at work and hasn't had too much time to turn. She did get down there last night.

Here's what it looks like now......

Wood turners should start self help groups for those flat board guys to teach them that spalt, knots, twisted grain and all those defects are great.

That is a beautifl bowl.

Reddog

Wow, nice too see this log had more than firewood in it. :)

Warbird

WOW!   :o  That is one of the more beautiful bowls I've ever seen.  Nicely done.  What is it coated with in the pictures to make it all shiny like that?

fishpharmer

Okay, that's it.  I am gonna have to get a lathe someday.  Incredible looking bowl.  Now I'm looking a little differently at some old logs laying around .

Bro. Noble

Well,  I'm not very artistic and therefore am not able to appreciate some stuff as well as those of you that are more gifted.  I have a hard time understanding how people can be so crazy about wood that is begining to rot.  Elm is about my least favorite of woods.  But,  even I can recognize that that is a beautiful work of art that the craftsman and owner should take great pride in 8) 8)

Don't get the wrong idea on what the pigroast is or all about. You don't need to be 21 to attend. The Forestry Forum Pigroasts are Family events, so selling kids to come would not be an option as the kids are more then welcome and encouraged to come, and those that have come always have a very good time and look forward to coming back.  :)

Gotcha, Jeff.  ;)

I always just figured it'd be nice to have a few cold ones during the course of the roast.  ;D I've still got some woodwork with pig roast stuff all over it from 1996. Could have been a different pig roast tho. *shrug*

Frau Burlkraft, checking in.  I requested Burlkraft send a big THANK YOU to everyone for all the nice compliments and comments during my recent turning adventures.   ;D ;D.
He suggested I get my own account so I could do it myself.  Bear with me as I don't know what I am doing-never been on a forum before.   So...many, many thanks for all of the encouragement and admiration I received during my turning.  I have a lot of fun and it has taken a long time, but I am improving.  I think I turned the corner when I wasn't afraid of the wood or the lathe anymore.   Anyway, it has been great getting to know you all and once I figure out a bit about the forum, I won't be "afraid" of posting anymore, either!!!   A special thanks to Reddog for the gorgeous elm...the bowl would be nothing without special wood.

Nope, he don't need our help with dat one pal. ;D

Steve - The only thing we had in the barn was a tractor that really didn't run, and a bunch of birds. I suspect you may be talking about someone else's boy; i had nothing but good grades and straight up behavior. :D if you are insinuating otherwise, maybe you should go to the barn!  ;)

Jill! Welcome to the Forum! Good to see you joined up, I was wondering how long it would take. Hope you'll have as many laughs as I have had here, good peoples.
