What should I get if I check my compression (lbs.)in an older 066 magnum?

What is the proper procedures(in a nut shell to check the compression) with a compression tester I borrowed.

Thanks Matt

I would guess 140 - 150 psi.  Anything less then 120psi and shes getting ready for a redo.

Screw the gauge in and pull on the cord, probably best to do when it is hot. The thing is you are not going to be able to pull much more then 120 psi without breaking the cord. You could do a leak down test, but, unless you make your own, most of the cheap ones top out at 100 psi.

I have many saws and have pulled over 150psi of compression on most of them, and have never broken a starter rope.

Remove the spark plug, squirt some oil into the cylinder followed with a bit of fuel, pull a couple of times on the starter to work the oil onto the cylinder walls.
Fit the spark plug back, Start the saw in the fast idle position.
If the saw sounds healthy initially and weaker once the smoke clears off, compression could be weak.

I guess I am unlucky then  :D

Starter ropes wear out, they don't break if in good condition .
