Talked to my neighbor last night and he told me he had an accident a few days ago.  He's an older guy who owns some rental cabins next to my property.  Apparently, he got 'in the zone' while using his electric log splitter, didn't make sure his fingers were clear, felt a sharp pinch, thought to himself, "Hey, my fingers were in there.", released it, pulled his glove off and at the first joint of both his index and middle fingers had been pinched off.  The middle finger was completely severed and they were unable to reattach it.  The index finger was still hanging by a bit of flesh/tendon.  They reattached it and it looks like he'll have mostly full use when done healing.

No matter if it is an axe, a wood splitter, a table saw, a skid steer, or a backhoe, you just can't let your guard down for a second.

I can see why all the electric log splitters I have seen so far require two hands to operate.
