I ran across this photo and link... methinks that someone just learned a very expensive lesson  :D

As near as I can estimate the log weighs around 6 tons, and it's loaded (incorrectly I might add - not centered over the axle's) on a trailer with a net payload capacity of probably around 6,500 lbs (5 lug wheels / 4K axles).

I think everyone here probably knows better, and if they don't they know enough to hide it.  :D

I'd lay half of the blame on the guy running the loader. He must have dropped that log to bend the truck like that. Apparently there was total group ignorance involved.

I agree Jeff, shared brain cells there. :D

What I want to know is, how did he plan to unload it when he got home.  ???

Tim L

unstrap it and drive quickly in circles until it rolls off, taking down the neighbors garage. He can then saw it into boards for said garage!

I was thinkin' the same thing!  Anybody that would do something like that had no business with a chainsaw in their hand, let alone laying it to a tree that size!

I once retrieved an 8-ton oak log with a F-350 dually and 10-ton gooseneck trailer, and it was still dicey.  I've seen some pretty gross overloads from some of our membership here, but I don't think any of us have smushed a truck AND trailer with one stick. :D :D

You have to be careful here. Now a forumenite will take a Ford, load it down and bend it up. I know how things work here. ::)

Wow.... I can't imagine how that even sounded like a good idea.  I'd guess that loader's rated at 15,000 lbs.  So I'd guess that log at slightly less then that.

it happens....

wonder if the log was "dropped" or "placed".... with the forks, I'd guess "dropped".

I know, I own a couple of each brand, the timing just seemed right for that comment.   ;D

I'll be the one to mess up my Ford with my big cypress log. Hope not.

He just needed a trailer jack with one of those little plastic wheels on it.  That would've supported the tongue and still let him drive down the road  :D

Yesterday I hauled a few nice 16' pine logs in a 10' dump trailer. It was heavy and a little bouncy, but I went slow. Feel just fine about it now though ;D

OOWWW!!!!!!  :o  Centered & balanced on the trailer, he mighta had a chance, as long as there were no big hills or sudden stops on the way home. The way it was loaded though, no way -

The trailer is my dad's, the truck is mine.  When I told him about the first time I posted those pics here, making fun of Chevy's, he said he wanted his trailer back.  LOL

That particular loader has a lifting capacity of just under 20,000 pounds. It had no trouble picking up that log, so nobody had a clue how much it was actually lifting.

Seen that situation more than once  :o. Leastwise, by putting it that far forward on the trailer the loader didn't bang up the trailer fenders :D.

If he had it loaded just behind the fenders he could have shifted into 4 wd and driven home without the rear tires touching the road. I wonder if it was a borrowed pick up? He likely blamed the loader operator for not centering the load.

I was at the boat ramp once watching some guys pull in after a long day deep sea fishing, (they had an empty cooler so you could tell it was a long day) the guy driving the boat couldn't hit the trailer correctly so he got it close and tried to use the winch to pull it on the last few feet. The boat was a large inboard with a cabin, and heavy, the cable broke and they used the anchor rope to tie the boat to the winch, about 3 feet short! the full size bronco pulled the boat up the ramp, and off they went, every time they hit a bump the aft end of the boat left a good scar on the road and the rear axel was almost off the ground.

It ain't hard to find overloads, misloads, and otherwise unsafe trailers.

About the worst I have seen was in Indiana when Tnlogger, Woodbowl and I were enroute to the '06 Piggy Roast.  We kept smelling something foul, and Tnlogger and I kept looking askance at Woodbowl, who denied any wrongdoing. :D  Finally, we realized that it was propane we were smelling.  Shortly we came upon an old pickup towing not one, but two 16' trailers loaded to the gills with old propane tanks.  The tanks were piled on the trailers and the truck, and "secured" with old fence wire.  They were literally hanging off the sides, and spewing propane everywhere!  Needless to say, I put the pedal to the metal and got around them as quickly as I could.  The last place I wanted to be was behind him! :o :o

From my standpoint , i wouldn't haul that log home for it.  I know some of the other type mills you guys have will carve it up but on my band those bigens are too much trouble.  I got one large one and 3 halves laying out there right now that I just dread to cut.  Too bad fishfarmer is so far a way. :D  that big bad boy of his would do it.  Tim
