I noticed that my chain wasn't oiling so I took the saw down to my shop to try and find the problem. I thought maybe the oiler tube was plugged. Tried to blow back through the tube with WD40 and noticed it running out from under the clutch. Stared taking things off and found the clutch broken and the pieces had worn into the top of the oiler pump, wearing the line in two. Big question is: Is all this repairable and how much will it cost. The saw is 9 years old. Still runs great and was cutting great up till now. Not very many husky dealers around here. I feel sure I could do it myself with a little guidence from some of you experts here if it is cost effective. If not viable, which model Stihl would be comparable to the 372?

I'm not familiar with the 372 oiler, did the clutch damage the case in any way? I've found Husky saws to be fairly easy to work on. Some will say there is no Stihl equal, but the MS460 will hold it's own. ;D

There is a little wear where the broken pieces where dragging around, but I don't think it would cause a problem. I'll most likely buy a new saw anyway and repair this one later.

Have you ever changed the sprocket on this saw? I couldn't imagine a clutch grenading like that unless somebody wore slap through the sprocket and kept running it. The only reason I ask is because you said you took it to the dealer rather than simply remove the side cover and look at it. Some people don't know that the sprocket needs to be changed once in a while, they just keep throwing new chains on it and never look at it.

LeeB

I didn't take it to a dealer, I took it down to my shop where al my tools and stuff are at. Never have changed the sprocket but that's not the problem. The clutch itself is broken. It broke in three places and the three little pieces tha broke off were dragging around inside and wore down the oiler and some of the case. I don't know what the parts names actually are, but I do know it is the clutch.

Well here's a link to the Husqvarna 372xp illustrated parts list. It's in .PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat reader to view). This should help you identify which parts are broken as well as giving you an idea how they are supposed to go together. The parts numbers are helpful when ordering parts, since you don't have to hope that the order taker translates your descriptions correctly.  :P ???

OK, it is the clutch and oil pump. I couldn't open the link you gave me, all that comes up is adobe player but no jonsered page.

Next question. Can these parts be ordered as an assembly or do I have to order individual parts? I'm having a tough time finding anything as there is no serial # in any of the parts searches that comes even close to mine.

I am going to my job now. Should I check the price for a clutch and a pump?
I'll check anyway.
Will write again in about five hours.

sablatnic

You are sure it is the clutch and pump, that you need, and not just the clutch springs and the drive for the pump?
I'll get all the prices, but they might be different from the prices at your place.

Rock_j how do you know when to change the sprocket and whats the procedure? My 257 has been a good saw but as of late she acting a little funny almost binding for no reason then it works fine.
when hell freezes over I'll snowmobile there too

sablatnic

Got the prices.

The clutch is 61.10
If you need just the springs, they are 4,35 a piece
pump is 104.54
drive for pump is 12.76

The clutch and pump are complete, but you will probably need the drive too.

And the prices are in Denmark! Without tax.

Are there still people out there without Adobe Acrobat reader installed on their computers? Hard to imagine.  ???  That's one of those things that should be installed on the first day of ownership, along with Flash and an antivirus program.

CB, here's a page with several workshop manuals. They will describe several basic repair procedures. Again, they are in .PDF format which requires Adobe Acrobat reader to view.

I don't see any older 2xx series saws listed but the procedure hasn't changed much in the last couple decades. I'm sure the 357 should be almost identical to the 257.

Thanks for the help sablatnic. I found the parts I need used on Ebay for about 1/3 of the price. There is also a 372 without a jug that I'll bid on for future spare parts.

Thanks for all your fine help too R-J. Yep, it sure is a shame that there are rubes out there without a whole lot of computer savy and really don't want to learn anything about them. Us rubes sure enjoy being reminded of that fact too.

You're welcome, Lee.  ;D
I gave you a large amount of very useful information, it's a shame you aren't able to see it. But perhaps somebody else viewing this thread might gain from it.

And if you choose to be offended by my offer of help, then that's your problem. This is a computer accessed internet forum, being able to use a computer is sort of a prerequisite for being here.  ;)

Rocky_J

Oh, and since you are so 'computer challenged' I will be happy to mail you the printed 372 parts list that I got with my last saw purchase. Just shoot me a PM with your mailing address, I won't even mention the 'rube' thing.  ;D

ARKANSAWYER

Well since you got it handled I am late.  But Millers Saw Shop in Harrison handles Husky as does Gregg Farm Supply in Midway.  No Stihl equals a Husky.

Being a rube regarding computers must include me too. I normally purchase my computers where I purchase my saws too. Out of a dumpster. ;D

LeeB

Well R-J, believe it or not I managed to find the parts I needed, and I do aprreciate your attempt to help. What I don't appreciate is your condescending attitude when offering it.

This is what could cause a clutch to go bad .The drum bearing gets worn out and the drum will tend to round over the clutch shoes .This cause the drum to run eccentric and thus eventually break a clutch segment or the clutch spinder .

People often have the tendency to just not check the condition of the clutch assembley . Just recently I had a Stihl 028 super sitting on my bench that had been ran with no bearing in the drum and no e-clip .How it ever stayed in there is beyond my comprehension .

Only pure blind luck but all it did was throw two springs and break one segment which is amazing .

LeeB

You could well be right Al. Up till this little ordeal I never even knwe what the innirds of the clutch looked like. Nor did I know how the oil got from the tank to the chain. Learning sure can be expensive.  >:(

'taint no big deal ,we've all at one time or another done things from lack of knowledge .

The bad part is when you know better but do it any way--guilty as charged . :D

I had a 372 and the next size bigger and never had any luck with them. I ended up swithing to stihl. I just dont have much luck with saws. I am going to try and find a buck saw for my loader. ;)

LeeB

I hear what you're saying SML. I went and bought a MS 361 yesterday to have another saw and it will go back tomorrow. It won't start and spits gas out of the muffler. I'm gonna go get another Husky. Can't decide if I want a 346XP or a 357XP. I ordered parts to rebuild the 372, so I want a smaller saw to go with it.
