I came across this article while reading the news yesterday.  While I agree something has to be done I think this proposal is a little overboard, but then again its the way most politians react.

Edmonton mayor mulls ban on 'large knives' as stabbings escalate

Posted: February 23, 2009, 2:20 PM by Chris Boutet

Following a rash of stabbings over the last four days that left two people dead and another in hospital, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel is reportedly looking into the feasibility of banning the sale of large knives in an attempt to curb the violence

The Journal has the story on Edmonton's latest knife attack victim here. Brendan Malcolm McNaughton, 21, was killed in a scuffle with four men in the parking lot of a west-end pub. Mr. McNaughton was the city's sixth homicide of the year and the second Edmonton man to be fatally stabbed since Thursday, when 24-year-old Landis Tyson Stick was found dead in front of an apartment building in the city's troubled 107th Avenue area.

The spate of violence has Mr. Mandel reportedly looking into the possibility of a city-wide ban on the sale of the types of knives used in such attacks. Mr. Mandel told media that he plans to meet with city councillors and Edmonton Police Chief Mike Boyd to put forth a bylaw proposing the ban.

"I'm going to ask our law department if we can ban knives in the City of Edmonton, ban the kind of selling of those knives," he told CTV Sunday. "This is getting right out of hand and if people think they're going to be able to do this in our city they're wrong and the time has come to stop it right it its tracks," said Mandel.

There were 13 stabbing deaths in Edmonton in 2007, accounting for 40% of the 33 homicides investigated that year, according to the EPS Homicide Unit's workload analysis report.

It is unclear at this time what types of knives would be targeted and how such a ban would be enforced.

If they removed all of the people from Edmonton  and kept them out, they could get deaths by knives to zero.

They should ban automobiles too....just think of all the people that get hurt by autos. ::) ::)

"the city's troubled 107th Avenue area."

That sounds like a good place to start looking for the source of the trouble. ::)

Perhaps they could look into a ban on pinheaded Mayors. ;D

The Feds have finally admitted the gun registration didnot work and this fool wants to try knives. I predict he will get shot down(pun  ::) )

Dang the "troubled area" used to be 97 Street, then 118 Ave, now 107 Ave. They just can't catch those slippery li'l devils.

Handguns have been severely restricted in Canada since 1934, auto's and semi auto's are outright banned, but rules certainly have not restricted their use by the criminal element here. Drug fuelled shootings are almost a daily occurrence lately.
Mandel has never met a mic or camera he did not like but he is out in left field. The city does not have jurisdiction, weapons fall under the criminal code which is a federal matter, and how would he enforce it. Every kitchen knife is a potential weapon.

That was my thought too.  Even a sharp stick will do the job in a pinch. ::) :D

Remember what damage those utility knives can do too!!!!!

funny thing they want to ban all these things, but......... look at the horror movies that are made which can work on young minds.

They have not taken our guns .. I can assure you they will never take my guns while I am standing .
We do , as you do, need to register our guns before taken possetion of them . Our registration is just a little bit more complicated because before buying a gun we need to have a card attesting that we know how to use the said gun safely , that we know how to put said gun away safely . Once we safely have all this , we can go in and buy any hunting riffle , or , hand gun ( as long as you have the correct card ) and be on your way the same day .

Yes we do have a registration system here for our guns , it dont work like the politicians where hoping. They had it set in there little pea soup brain that all guns where going to be registered and from that point on no more shooting would happen  ::)  Well they hit a brick wall and have yet to realise that it is an impass and are not willing to back down Maybe someday we could have commen sense in office , but that would be asking to much of these nobrainers .  :-\

sharp edge

Millwaukee, WI, about the size of Edmonton, did have 100 hand gun homicides a year. Last year they put the screws to hand guns and had 35. (Edmonton had 33 total). Must be the hand gun way is more fun. 8)

Enforcing the laws already on the books is all that's required to end alot of this foolishness.

How big a knife do you need to kill someone.? During 9/11 terrorists used boxcutters on the planes, did they not?  About a 1" blade. Maybe they will only allow all knives under 1"?

yes there are a lot of truly stupid politicians, they really dont care about people getting killed they just want to make laws up so they can get more money out of the general public that way they can spend more money...

it has been proven around the world that gun bans dont work and in fact violent crimes in areas where they have been band gets worse MUCH worse and lasts much longer with little chance of stopping it as the criminals learned that when the public at large does not have guns then they can rob, steal, rape murder at will with less fear from people being able to stand up against them.

in USA they are trying to get some doozzy of laws passed (search for HR45) to basically legislate out of existence most guns, most people think it cant happen, & that is what the government is counting on (the people not watching them)

seems that taking Knifes is what they are going to have to do in UK as well they banned guns a long while back yet the murder rates have kept climbing, similar thinks happened in down under according to news reports.

anyhow I think the governments of the world need to wrap every person in bubble wrap from birth so the truly stupid ones dont get killed off quite so fast, that way we will be able to have more politicians get elected  ::)

I do like to read a lot of the DARWIN awards that go around though so perhaps having some of the stupid people in the news is not all bad :p

If what I've read is accurate - Vermont has the lowest gun crime rate in the country, per capita; and the most lax gun laws (i.e. we don't have any).  I think there's a direct correlation.   I personally don't carry, but I would in a second if I thought that my family or I was in danger.
