I need a pile of 1x6 and 1x4's in pine.

I'd like to save a little money from the lumber yard but given the economy, I'd also like my money to go to someone small that needs it. Darned if I can find a small sawmill or a part timer in Southern Virginia though.

Is there a registry of small sawmill operators or better yet, one of the members here who wants to saw these for me?

Thanks!

Jeff

Use the forum extras link on your menu bar and then find a sawyer on it.

I'm afraid that didn't work too well. There weren't any close to the farm so I tried one in Williamsburg which is close to the burb house. No reply. Found one on Craigslist which always makes me nervous, called got voice mail on first number, left message, called their cell, got voice mail. No callback.

Soooo...any help would be appreciated!

That was Rick, VA Sawyer.   He kind of fell off the edge of the earth.   I don't think he's posted to the forum for a while.   I see by his profile he's now in NC and was last on in December, but didn'r post.

I'm sure I've got some contacts.  What are you looking to do?  What's the goal?

I need around 800-1x6x12's and I don't want to pay $2.28 each for them :D

Actually, I need more than that but I haven't done a full take off yet.

DR Buck

Unless you find somebody that will saw at a loss, you're going to pay at least $1.50 each plus blade damage and setup costs.   I know just at my bf rate they would cost you $2.10 each.   If you can get 1x6x12 for $2.28 and they are dry and ready to use that may be a better deal.   Then you have no mess to cleanup.

I'm with Jeff and Dr. Buck.  With setup cost and what not you'd be $2.40 or there abouts off of our mill.

Hmmm, I guess that settles that then. I suppose that's why everyone is selling their mills (That I've talked to so far), they can't compete with the lumber yards. I have two different places falling all over themselves trying to sell me kiln dried and dressed 1x6x12 pine for $2.28...delivered. :-\

that price is .38/bf, that's a bargain.

Things are tight in the building industry here. It's only a bargain if someone buys it and there aren't many takers right now.
