Hi Guys,

A quick question for ya's on our mid 70's TJ230D.  When we put the winch into release or free spool it unwinds really fast.  I'm sure there is some easy adjustment just haven't been able to get the cd to check the troubleshoot guide.  It pulls fine, you just end up respooling the cable all of the time, it's makes the trip take doulble the time.  Thanks for the help

Tighten the brake by turning the adjuster nuts down on the brake piston rod.A little goes a long ways.

I don't know which winch you have but the gearmatic has a set screw in the housing on the top side over tha brake band, there is a spring under that set screw to put a slight drag on the drum which you can vary tension by adjusting screw.

Sorry,I assumed your 230 had a Eaton winch.I have a 380 with a Gearmatic and that tension screw doesn't seem to do much.

One thing I learned with the tension screw on the gearmatic is that unless you keep it lubed with anti-seize it rusts in the bore, also seal the screw opening in case with silicone sealer to keep the water out.
I can adjust mine down to almost stop the drum.
