My wife just talked to her aunt. They are from Cambria. They have 30 inches of snow and are supost to get 6 more inches tonight. How do you guys deal with that much snow i would go crazy. We have not had any yet just freezeing rain a couple of times and everything basicly stops around here.

Just keep piling it up and pushing it back... ;D ;D ;D

If not, the driveway gets narrower and narrower.., and if comes a warm spell where it melts and turns to ice, you are stuck not able to move it until Spring comes.

And the more we shove it out of the way and pile it up, the more our driveways look like canyons.  I set out my snowsnake traps today.  I hope I catch some this year. I hear their skins are bringing in some good money.  Last year I didn't have much luck. I got one in my trap but he tore it up. I bought some heavy duty traps this year. They are very elusive critters.

I was tought at a young age to push the snow as far as you can and then some . I do that now and I always have snow in the back of my mind when setting up new buildings and or planting vegetation . Aint nothing worse then not having any wheres to stick/throw/push/blow snow during all of winter . It gets narrow , but that also makes for nice pictures  ;) .........  He who has biggest snowbank wins in the end    8)...

After nine hours driving and another five in the line up, no go.They are hoping to get out of Vancouver this afternoon but it's not looking good and the road home will likely be closed.

We are having the same continuing snow on this side of the lake. Still snowing and now have to go out and blow it again to open the drive. I've put more gas through the snow blower so far this December than I have for total winters in past years. Woods jobs are being put on hold due to the closed access routes and poor working conditions which I don't need to be out in.

My 36 inch snow depth gauge has gone out of site a few days ago. I now need to watch that the high snow banks and narrow roads aren't taking the side mirrors off the pick-up. ;)

Oh how I remember those Iowa winds in winter blowing snow. Brings back memories of getting the old A John Deere started by spinning the flywheel, then loading the manure spreader and heading for the fields.  Was a cold ride....can't remember what I wore to stay reasonably warm, but it was before the invention of hooded sweatshirts (at least in my wardrobe).

Just read that at noon today, Madison set the all-time record for December snowfall, at 36".  The old record was 35" set in the year 2000. The month record is for 37" in February of 1994.

I may have to rethink this.  We have a storm coming in starting tomorrow, starting with freezing rain, then turning to all rain Friday night into Saturday. They are saying heavy rain with maybe even thunder and lightening with potential flood warnings. It ain't going to flood here unless the rest of the world floods, but for the first time ever I'm concerned about the weight.   There is 30" plus of compacted snow on the roof now.

You laugh, but I seen the Tobique River, up in Riley Brook, in 2006 flood and ice move in January, first ever that anyone ever heard of. That place usually don't move ice until April. Now Riley Brook could be Who-Flung-Dung to most anyone, but it's a remote area where the only way up or down is along the river road. Along the river are woodlots and out from there is wilderness. 35 miles east of St Leonard, 30 miles north of Plaster Rock

My basement had 4" water in January, never seen that before neither. My water even went bad for a few days. I'm on top of a hill. ::)

Jeff,

Sorry to see you have to do that. Wise move but, MAN, that is some work. I used to have to shovel my shop "flat" roof do to water leaking in from ice dams, BOY do I hate that work.

My favorite snow is the 32 degree type, that rolls into the gutter and down the downspout. I used to LOVE snow, but now it is mostly a burden if it is more than 5" (for sledding of course, just hung lights on our new run out the front door, we are the offical Tiger Cub sledding site for our pack ;D) We even have snow safety fence and hay bales at the bottom of the run so the boys and girls don't hit any trees. Next year plowing, discing, and contouring the run ;D

Don't over do it on that roof.

My step father had a two cycle little snow blower, that KICKED #$%. That woudl be GOOD to have.

Jeff,

When the rain comes in, you guys be real careful.  Back when I worked at the Pentagon, we keep a running record of the flooding down at the intake building.  The 2nd highest level occurred when we had 48" of snow up on Skyline Drive, I had 32" in Syria, VA and the Manassas area had 22" and than the rain came. And boy did it wash it all down the river.  Man was it ugly in some places.  So when the rain starts, you guys please be real careful.

got a bunch of freezing rain in Peoria area last week.  Official weather bureau had reports of .50 inches to .90 inches
of freezing rain at various towns surrounding Peoria.   My tree branches normally 10-12 feet in the air had their tips touching the ground. That's the one's that didn't break off.  One tree had branches drooping clear to ground and they were blocking on lane of my driveway.  Drove around them so I wouldn't break them off hoping they would survive. Got warmer in 33-34 range Tuesday night and the warm rain melted most of the ice off the trees and by today they were back up to normal height.   I'll be picking up branches for a day sometime in the future.

Jeff, my daughter and family are down here for Christmas. When she hears about the weather up there she might want to not go home. They have had less snow in Auburn than you have had in Harrison, but she said that she spends a lot of time shoveling their short drive. I can feel the pain.   so far this year we been lucky, not much snow, got 2 or 3 ice storms mild ones so far, not like the one 4 yrs ago now. (I still have damage in the woods from that, we had ~3/4" OF ICE)   that was on top of ~6" of snow, I had a lot of good trees come down, the north side of my white pines around the cabin looked like someone dropped a huge limb chopper down the north side, I hauled 6~8 pick up loads of limbs into the back form them & burnt them 3 days straight to get the pile small enough to toss more on :D   we got a green Christmas this year, no snow, same as last year.   but was easier to get to family's house.

Jeff: the house looks good with all that snow around it (not that it wasn't great looking to begin with) but sure glad I don't have t0 deal with that much snow for now..

Hey Jeff, wise move getting that snow off the roof before the rain.  Do you have any concerns about all of that snow right up against the foundation of your house?  What kind of foundation do you have and how is the grade of the land?  As the snow melts, will it drain away from the house?

Oh about clearing that snow from around the windows...  be real careful wielding the shovel near the glass.  Yes, I'm speaking from experience! ;)  Sorry about your back/hip.  I've got a bad back and shoveling of the magnitude you are doing would likely have me walkin' with a cane for a week.  Hope you and Tammy had a wonderful Christmas.

Tug hill is AMAZING. It is just high enough to SQUEEZE all the moisture from the air coming off the east end of Lake Ontario. It is a phenomenon. There is a ton of BIG snow throwers on just about every farm.

In my area of SW Pa. you see very little old (1800's or early 1900's) homes in "stupid" places, places where there is poor weather, high wind areas and the like. Out of necessity the folks just avoided those areas as it was already hard enough to scrape out an exsistance. Today if there is an opeen lot and it's cheap, there is a home, regardless of topography, geology, or meterology. It is common, if you look for for it round these parts and likely in other parts of the country where there is issues of topography that can dictate weather. I once worked for a client at their second home about 40 miles away, it is on the Allegheny Front west of Bedford Pa., there are no old homes up there, GOD AWFUL weather, I'd leave 70 degrees and sunny , to find 45 and cloudy, and drizzle. I feel like the folks that bought property in this second home area (Folmont, I call it foulmount ) got "snookered".  The subtle topgraphy here can make weak fronts hang for hours and hours, bigger mountains would kill the front, no mountains, it goes right thru. Very interesting

Up in the tug hill there is a town I think Redfield that thought it set a national 24hr snowfall record of 100inches a few years ago, Turns out they took hourly readings and added them together whereas they should of left it all alone for 24hrs and then measured it. No matter what 100 inches in 24hrs is a lot of snow. And this goes on from nov. to april.

I saw some of our Mississippi snow today. Now that is my kind of snow.

Why not just 1 pain free day?

The bit of time I spent around Lake Michigan, during the winter, lead me to believe that the worse of winter was the end of January and February.  If that's the case, we might not hear from you folks in a few days for a couple of months.  :P :-\

There are gas stations in the tug hill that have massive storage tanks and get fill them in the fall. For the snowmobilers. They can't get in with a truck for four or five months.

We have over 100" of white stuff for the month of december alone. I have a feeling that it is going to be a longggggg winter.

When the snow gets windshield depth its time to go inside and warm up.

Looks like fun....are ya hung up on the line fence there?   ;D

Yeah it doesn't get much deeper in the midwest area. ~200" or so is average. And so far we are at 100", so unless winter makes some big changes it might be a record setting year.

Tom

200 feet of snow?!?!?!?

I don't want to live there!

Jeff

inches Tom. :)

Hey! The warm weather and rain today made me realize something.  I never got the bikes put away.  I'm looking out the window wondering what the chrome thing was in the snow. I looked out a bit later and saw not only the handle bars but the seat had come into view too!  The rest of it is still encased and with the rain its probably in ice now.

Ya 200 Inches. haha. 200 inches is hard to find a place for, let alone 200 feet.

200 feet would be 20 stories.  That would officially be enough snow to make even me detest the stuff!  ;D

SwampDonkey

Glacier country, just wait until that bares down on the house and barn with some rain next summer. If it slides fast enough over the landscape it might reach Tom by his 70th birthday. :D

200 feet would have enough pressure to start forming a glacier :o.

Well, that might not be so bad.  If it got close enough to the porch, I could use it in my Mint Julep. :D
