Detecting "spiked" trees?

Here's the situation.  In our woods we had some nice cherry trees go down in a windstorm which we intended to skid out and saw when time allowed.  Got in the woods today and found the nice 30" tree had been cut in two foot sections from the root to the first knot, about 10'.  Nothing else was touched.

Turns out earlier in the summer the adjoining woods, which belongs to a neighbor, was logged.  The jerked over fly by night Amish that did it had stopped in here at the farm and wanted to log our woods.  Generic business card with no address, just a cell phone number. No thanks.  He asked about the nice cherry that was uprooted.  Told him it wasn't for sale as we were going to saw it ourselves.  Basically they got angry and left. 

After seeing the tree cut up 2+2=4. My concern is that there are other veneer grade trees standing and it wouldn't have been beneath them to add a little iron to the trees...  Any pointers on what to look for?

a metal detector would find them.

depends on how long ago they spiked them, if it was years ago probably only a metal detector could find them, but if it was recently you might be able to actually see the end of the spike. just be carefull when you cut if you do suspect someone has.
