Fatal accident

Michigan State Police from the Newberry Post are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 57-year-old Newberry resident.

Gilbert Ott was last seen on Monday when he departed for the forest to cut wood. After failing to return, family members contacted authorities regarding his disappearance.

From the Soo Evening News

State troopers determined through Michigan Department of Natural Resources that Ott had obtained a wood-cutting permit for a specific area. A ground and air search of that location led to the discovery of Ott's vehicle and authorities found the deceased man at that location.

A subsequent investigation has determined Ott was the victim of an unspecified wood-cutting accident.

Michigan State Police were assisted by the Luce County Sheriff Department and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in this matter.

Kevin, the update on this one on the news yesterday was that the fellow did not die of an accident, but after a preliminary autopsy, it was determined he had died of natural causes.
