This whole face cord thing has been beat to death not only here but everywhere else on the internet that has anything to do with firewood  :P ;)  :)

Does that mean that you don't want to talk about it ? :D

Corley5

I'm goiny to NY and selling face cords for half the price of the other guys. ;D 8)
Not my fault when I drop a load of 2" long stuff in someone's yard, they ordered a face cord. :)

LeeB

The feller I buy wood from sells by the "rick", which to me is 1/3 cord. I never measure what he brings me. The wife likes it 12-14" and that's what he burns himself, so when he cuts for his own use, he does some for us too. I'm happy with the load and price, so he could call it a donkey load if he wanted to. If I didn't like it he'd be carrying his donkey load right back out with him.

I don't think it is "beat to death" as long as we have a thread starting out with a member wanting to know the difference.

;D ;D ;D

Just call it what it is....I think, :)

When I go to the gas pump, I expect a gallon of gas to be metered out.   Might not be too happy if I found out the volume of a gallon had changed to something less than that, without being told up front.
Like Tom said, there are basic reasons for the standards being set....as someone tried to deliver less maybe?

All is well as long as the buyer is happy with the units.

there are a lot of scam artists in the firewood business.  I support the full cord or part thereof.

unfortunately, if one is slick, then he can still scam the consumer by simply "mis education"

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

here in Mo. people use face cords to rip other people off, when they get caught they always say they said face cord not cord. DA in our area has caught several pulling that scam.

I think some of you are missing the point.  Standardization of marketed sizes is the only fair way to compete or shop.  That is why we have a bureau of Standards.   We don't have to mess around with trying to figure out Yellow pounds and blue pounds or light dollars or heavy dollars, or round gallons and square gallons, etc.  When you market a size of anything that contains an unknown quantity, you are opening yourself up to lawsuits and scams.  While face cords might be understood locally,  the quantity will change from locale to locale.  Face cord is like looking at a two dimensional picture.  It has width and height, but the depth is unknown.  A cord is defined in 3 dimensions and still the quantity may be questioned because of the tightness of the stack and  split or nonsplit wood.  Still, it makes sense to use one configuration that gives representation of the quantitys in all  localities.

This is how the metric system got started. I think the French had to many square gallon scam artists. :D

Dave

I like the metric system, by the way. ;)

Giving the New York guys credit, their State Dept. of Ag. allows the marketing of face cords, but all three measurements must be given.

In looking, I found this company that advertises by face cords. Even a cord is defined by two face cords.  You will notice that the sticks are 18 to 24 inches long *on an average.  I don't see how the buyer can tell what he is getting.

We have a firewood dealer near us who has the nickname Short Cord. He got that name by being short on each load of firewood delivered. When called on it he tells the customer that it depends how you stack it. ::) He somehow still has a customer base.

2x4x8 = 1 1/2x 3 1/2x 96, sometimes 92 5/8. 3/4 plywood= 23/32. What the heck.
May be a cord can be adjusted for bark, splinters and dead space.  ::) ::) :D :D

Does the state of Illinois mandate a specific scale for loggers and mills? (Let's be consistent with our logic here). Or is it not an issue since there are no "consumers" to protect?
