I had to take my Bobcat into the shop to have a few items repaired. During the time it was in the shop I rented a New Holland 785.
I thought I'd pass on a few observations about the two in case someone is trying to decide between the two.

New Holland pros: comfortable seat, slightly better visibility then bobcat, faster ground speed, smoother ride, engine & componets easier to get to and work on if needed.
Cons: Extremely noisy engine and screaching sounds when turning to the point that you have to wear hearing protection, cabin is harder to get into and out of and the seat belt needs to be fastened in order to run. Bobcat has a seat belt but also has a bar that pulls down and is easier/faster to apply. Controls for lift arms are very sloppy and erratic. I found it very hard to move stacks of lumber and stack them on top of each other. A little pressure on the down control would cause the the forks to jerk down  or up. In short the control was not nearly as precise as bobcat.

In short, I think I prefer the Bobcat although the new holland is a good machine.

Anyone with experience between other skidsteers care to comment? I would be interested in hearing a comparison between John Deere and Bobcat.

sharp edge

The ones with New Hollands here say they lifted higher, to put dirt in a dump truck. Don't know if this is still true or not.

I do believe it's a chevy/ford question.  They both make good machines.  The biggest difference is that the NH all are level lift design which is their design from the beginning.  I think this makes them more stable and less tippy.  I think alot of manufacturers now offer that design.  My personal preference (and I've owned both) is the NH For me it's more stable and much easier to get in and out of. The other thing is that I prefer the Ford 3 cyl diesel over the 4 cyl Kubota.  The Kubota  had problems with heads cracking.

Stumpy, I found getting into and out of the cabin was more difficult on the NH but maybe its just me. I'm not saying one machine is better then the other, although I perfer the Bobcat.

I'd like to hear comparisons between other machines as well.

I run both a NH 785 wheel and a Cat 277 rubber track machine. Hard for old man to get in either.  All joy stick controls in Cat.  Very nice.  Smoother ride.  Very good controls.  Don't have any screeching with NH. Foot controls  can get sloppy if linkage is worn.  Love the idea seat belt needs fastening to start in NH.  Keeps my employees safer.  Bar in Cat is quicker though.  Cheaper parts for NH.  Cat is very proud of their parts and their fittings aren't standard.

Both sure beat a front end loader all to pieces.

Yeah I must be getting old. ;D

I'd like to try all hand controls someday to see how they work.

I've ran several different skid steer loaders. In the bobcat/ new holland comparison the new holland is simple more stable which to me makes it more useable. Now on to bigger and better- Takeuchi loaders. This machine may be the best I've ever ran. These are by far the most stable versitile loaders on the market today. I've used one for many different applications and it has never failed me. Doing grading work, we got rid of our dozer as this machine all but replaces it. They are now being sold under different names such as Mustang and just recently Gehl. I know this may just be personal opinion but I wouldn't trade it for any other loader I've ever ran. The machine have pilot controls that are smooth and precise. I just thought I'd pass this on for those who may have never heard of these before. Takeuchi is taking over the market for loaders and excavaters in the south. I've met alot of folks that are swaping over and I have yet to hear any bad reports on these machines. below is a link to our particular machine but you can also access their others. Their price is up there but they are well worth it and you can now buy the Mustang Brand much cheaper and get the same performance.
