Does anyone else think a 20' shipping container with 2 panes of 4x8 tempered glass facing south would work? I can get a container down here on the coast for about the same price as concrete and building a similar size wooden framed one. Probably put a lean to roof on it.
Add a fan to circulate a little air. It should get pretty hot in there. Home built is always best. Chuck

I have built a few dry kiln's in the past, some worked better than others. In my experience I've decided a constant even heat gives the best results, so I don't think you'd be happy with just the tempered glass. If you built a "heat collector" using the glass with some volcanic rock, or something to hold the heat for a time you'd be a lot better off.
Other than that I don't see why a container wouldn't work. You might want to insulate it though.

Morning Andy, up the road one of the customers has a oak chair operation. I think he does use a constant heat source. I'll have to get up there and talk to him about it. He uses old panel truck body's so that was why I thought a container would work. Not sure if he insulates them. It's not like there isn't enough scrap wood around here to burn. Thanks Chuck
