I would like to use tapered cedar siding for roof on a barn that the wood shingles are getting bad. If this wont work please let me know.

I think that siding used on  a roof will cup and split in the wrong place letting water in .  Shingles give almost a triple coverage  so if one spits the other help shed the water .  The siding will only have double coverage in a small two to three inch area.

I wouldn't do it. I'd be worried about having sufficient overlap. If you think about it, a traditional shingle that is 12" wide usually has about a 5" exposure. Even then if the building is heated you can get ice that will back up under the shingles. 12" tapered cedar siding would be highhh price for sure. i'd go another route.
