Every winter we try to complete another project in the house. This winter it was railing for the balcony, since we have a grandson that will be crawling soon.  We mentioned we would string a hot wire up to keep the boy away from the edge, but nobody thought that was nearly as funny as we did.  :)

Here is what we have so far.

That looks neat Patty.  You could heat up a different wire in each panel, so he never knows which one it is.  It'll keep him entertained for hours. ;D :D

Well now that is something new to me. Kids or not though a railing is a nice addition. Looks like a good project. Does the wire thread into those short rods coming off the posts?

Yes it is stainless steel. The cables are polished and the horizontal rails & vertical posts are brushed stainless. The cables are fastened onto the walls and vertical posts with turn buckles that adjust to tension the cables. The center posts have holes drilled through them to thread the cables through. Each cable is 3 ½ " apart, and so we have 8 cables plus a top rail to get the railing 36" tall.

That is funny DanG...or you could change the charged ones around. It would be a new game every time he comes to visit.  :D

We have gotten used to not having a railing up here but it's funny to see guest walk up there. Every one of them will hug the wall walking along it. Now that the railing is up it doesn't bother me at all to be right up to the edge.

That should do the job!  Can you tension those strings to different tensions?  Tune to top to E, then the next to D, then A, then G, and so on.  Would make an awesome musical instrument ;D.  I am sure that Woodbowl could play it :D.  He can play anything.......

I was having nightmares thinking about an over night guest that wasn't used to no railing and in the middle of the night making a trip to the lavatory and in a half asleep sense of reality take a long step over the side. Ouch!!  :o

Patty ,you will definatly need to charge one or two of those wires .  That little ancle biter  will be walking soon and that 'rope ladder' will be one challange before he is walking the rail.

Baby steps Don, baby steps. We took over 5 years just to put up the fence.  ::)

Heck we waited almost a year for steps! The laundry basket on my head while negotiating the ladder was such an adventure that we figured, why hurry!?  :D
