After moving my homemade mill to a concrete base I adjusted everything to my liking and did some testing and tuning on my homemade bandmill.  Man did it cut sweet!  I thought this elm MIGHT have some funky worm holes or spalting in it.  Here is the view from the end.  A little punky and one split....it's gotta be good!

Opening cut - looks promising!  Little rot though....

Bummer.  Lots of rot.  The bug and worm holes are in the rot (of course) and no spalting.  Oh well, you win some, you loose some.  The nice reddish/brown color fades to gray in a few minutes, but you get a really pretty wood once dry.  Once you run it through the planer it is a brownish color with interesting figure.  I've noticed that elm wood stays straighter if you air dry it slowly.  At least it was a good day of playing with the sawmill!
