Ash was used up here.  I had a hand in sawing the logs and making new rods for the wells at both Grandparents farms.  Both wells have long since been replaced with 4" wells with submersible pumps  :) :)  The old wells are still there pump jacks and all.

Wellllll, I don't have any Ash. Got any ideas for substitutes. I also figured cypress, but alas, none of that either. My next thought was white oak but thought it might be a little heavy.

leeb--if you think the oak is going to be toooo heavy---one guy suggested using a overhead door spring--attached somewhere near the top of the windmill--so it aint pulling sideways on the sucker rod--and adjusting the tension accordingly--this guy was using 1 1/2 light elec conduit!!!!!!!!!! he said it would never break--!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ve heard of using 1/4" galvanized pipe also. I just thought I would try to stay traditional as much as posible.

I think cypress would be a good choice.  Naturally water/rot resistant and much lighter than white oak.
