I have already picked up a few of these answers from other posts.

- white oaks                  fall
- red/scarlet oaks          spring
- hickories                     ????
- yellow poplar               ????
- sourwood                   ????
- sassafras                    ????

These are the species that I have the most interest in propagating or sharing with other FF members.

I know your not looking at sugar maple, but apparently it germinates only in real cool conditions. Even under the snow in spring. I know it germinates in fall as well. I've seen it in heavy seed years if we get long open falls. Apparently, it needs as little as 30 days to break dormancy.

Some info in the silvics manual about tree germination may not fit the timing in your area because of differences in local climate.

Butternut, for instance is said to germinate in spring, but I only see them germinate here in July. Been consistent for years in my situation.
