Don't know the name of it, but is it the thing you put on the axe handle to support the buck saw when undercutting with one man?

Yup, thats exactly what it is.  Gilman pretty much had it as well. Its an undercutter.  :)

Thanks for that link Jeff, those are some great dawings! This whatzit also makes you think about some of the challenges facing the handloggers. It doesnt take any more effort to make an undercut with a chainsaw, but it must have been a real trial with a crosscut. :o
