Suddenly  ::) ::) We have a shortage of Electricity in CR. Tomorrow they will shut it off from 6 AM into the night.  ::) ::)  Can't find out exactly why ??? Been running on candles for 2 nights, and Reina just bought a NEW STOVE. I tried to get her to buy a Propane job, but, NOOOoooooooo.  NOW she's back to cooking on a 2 burner GAS hotplate type stove  ::) ::)

  CR is a never ending adventure.  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't think they realize all the small milk producers and ALL gas stations will be out of Electricity  ::) ::)  Gonna get interesting  :) :) :)

Do you have a generator FDH? Power outages certainly make things interesting. Even with all the storms we get here in the south I still haven't bought a generator. Part of me likes to rough it now and then. Hope they sort it out soon for you. Check back in when you get juice.

I finally got a Gen. Our biggest issue is pumping water out of our well during outages. We do live in a fairly developed area so it is never out long, the issue is we are back a 1 mile line that only serves three houses. If that line goes we are WAY down on the list of prioritites.

My folks were in the Peace Corps in Moldova, which couldn't pay it's power bill to the Ukraine. They got down to a few hours of junk power per day. We sent them frozen chicken  ::)

Is it lack of capacity or something else?

Fla._Deadheader

Down here, seems that the Govt. does a LOT of double talking.  ::)

One guy says water shortage from lack of rain (Hydro Power). Other guy says lack of Generation capacity. Other guy says malfunctioning Generator. Other guy says Coal fired plant is at capacity. Other guy says, yatta yatta,  ::) ::)

Propane stoves are so nice, especially when there's no electricity.  Now what are ya gonna do?  Get some parts to make your own generator?  You've NEVER listened to anyone, why start now??? :D :D :D

Fla._Deadheader

Word has already gone out needing parts.  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Deadheader:

We have the same problem here.  When they turn on the lights for the new soccer stadium the whole town goes black.  First things first.  The other night someone up the street was welding beams for the new Honda assembly plant and the lights went out in the whole neighborhood and the transformer went off like a bomb.

We cannot turn on all of our machinery at the same time.

I am looking for a steam powered wood fired generator if anyone has any ideas.

Jim

Fla._Deadheader

jjmk98k, that was simply a general response. If I wanted to point out someone, I KNOW how.  ;) ;D :D :D

We get LOTS of wind up on this hill  :) :) :)

Got to be some good info on Steam on the 'net ???

TV showed San Jose, lights out, and the streets filled with people. Robbers and such are rampant. I would just stay inside my house, and ready for trouble  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Alas and alack!  Poor Harold getting no respect for a serious problem!  :D

I want you to know that I've done my part.  I've loaded the mule with a propane gas stove and an electric generator.  Should be there in about two years.  Hang on!

((Hi Teri!!  I'm gonna go rescue your Dad))

Patty

Hey Roxie! I have a table that Harold needs really bad. Do you have some room on that mule?  ;D

Teri

Hey Roxie, you gonna head down this way? If so, I'll give you some bags of oreos you can take with ya,so pops doesn't starve!!!  ;D ;D :D :D

It shouldn't take you 2 years to get there. Just put yourself and the mule on the train, and head south. The railroad tracks are just down the road from me. You can swing in here to rest a spell, before going on,and you shouldn't have any problems finding a boat once you finally reach the southern tip of the state. ;D ;D

Patty, I think you better hang on to your table.... ;D

Waaall now Harold.  Ain't yunguns understanding, helpful and wonderful.
I got a bunch of Ideas on "standby" power, not to be confused with emergency power but I haven't found a little Perkins diesel as a base for the project.

Good Luck

Hey Harold - you snuck back into the country and I never even noticed!

The truth on the power outages is that this year, an El Nino year is very dry on the other side of the mountain (Guanacaste), and the lake is way down - you should drive over and see it if you haven't. Because of this, they are having to switch in fuel powered generators. This will be done by Friday and then all will be well according to ICE.

The last time there was a EL Nino year, it got so dry that there were cattle dying all over the place. - I think that was make in 1996 or so.

Definitely crime is increasing in San Jose - nothing like Newark NJ - but still no where I want to be.  Of course, take a city of more than a million anywhere in the world and I don't want to be there either.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

The laws are different here - there is more of an understanding that someone might just steal from you because they are hungry. If so, and you shoot them, you are in a heap of trouble. If someone is just trying to take from you a few vegetables, and you take their life - they consider that unnecessary force.

But, if they break into your house, shoot away. In fact, in the news a couple of months ago, some thieves broke into a yard where they did not belong, and a rottweiler killed one of them - and they police stood and watched. They felt they didn't have the right to kill the dog who was only doing his job.

But, if a dog bites someone unprovoked, the dog is dead and the owner is in big trouble.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

Slabs, contact Low_48.  He has some small Lister/? diesels that will fit your needs.  6.5+hp and constant prm.  I picked up three units from him and I intend to hook one up to a generator.  The other two will eventually power hydraulic systems.

Thanks OWW.  I had in mind the little 3 cyl. perkins in the Fergusen 35.  The built in governor would be a boon.  6.5 ponies would be a bit puny for my project, I think.

30+ hp at 1500 rpm but I would run it at 900-1200 revs and belt up to a 10 K generator.  Belt drive other stuff with electric clutches and use the excess heat to make hot water and heat the house if necessary.  My imaginary "housepower" project.  Probably never pull it off but it's one of my better dreams.
