Hey every one,

I just got through listening to the national anthom before the bears VS saints  game. I thought the guy singing did a wonderful job...It can be a moving song when it's song with passion and love for this country. I got on the computer hear and found the rest of the words if any one is interested here they are:

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

God bless,

Steve

That is the best part of the games.  It is still heart moving to this day for me to hear it.  I wonder if our Canadian Brothers are as moved by their anthem?

Thanks Blaze83,
I don't care where I am or what I'm doing I still stand and bring my hand to my heart when I hear it. Some find it funny in odd places. Can't help it.

Somehow I don't think we have a corner on national pride.  ;)

Seeing you were good enough to share your anthem with us Blaze I thought I'd share ours with you.

God of nations! at Thy feet
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our Free Land.
Guard Pacific's triple star,
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand

Men of ev'ry creed and race
Gather here before Thy face,
Asking Thee to bless this place,
God defend our Free Land.
From dissension, envy, hate,
And corruption guard our State,
Make our country good and great,
God defend New Zealand.

Peace, not war, shall be our boast,
But, should foes assail our coast,
Make us then a mighty host,
God defend our Free Land.
Lord of battles in thy might,
Put our enemies to flight,
Let our cause be just and right,
God defend New Zealand.

Let our love for Thee increase,
May Thy blessings never cease,
Give us plenty, give us peace,
God defend our Free Land.
From dishonour and from shame
Guard our country's spotless name
Crown her with immortal fame,
God defend New Zealand.

May our mountains ever be
Freedom's ramparts on the sea,
Make us faithful unto Thee,
God defend our Free Land.
Guide her in the nations' van,
Preaching love and truth to man,
Working out Thy Glorious plan,
God defend New Zealand.

Just like LedlieLogs I always feel compelled to stand up straight in respect of the song, still gives me goosebumps.

Heres the music too Link

We got 2 anthems;  I stand (and put my hand over my heart)  for both of 'em.  Here's the lyrics for the second one...........

Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten,
Look away, look away, look away Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land, where I was born in,
early on one frosty mornin',
Look away, look away, look away Dixie Land.

I wish I was in Dixie, Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
to live and die in Dixie.
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
Away, away, away down south in Dixie

Optional Verses

Ole Missus marry "Will the weaver"
Willum was a gay deceiver
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

But when he put his arm around 'er,
He smiled fierce as a forty pounder,
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver
But that did not seem to grieve 'er
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

Ole Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

Now here's a health to the next ole Missus
An' all the gals that want to kiss us;
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

But if you want to drive 'way sorrow
Come and hear this song tomorrow
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

There's buckwheat cakes and Injun batter,
Makes you fat or a little fatter;
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land

Then hoe it down and scratch your gravel,
To Dixie's Land I'm bound to travel,
Look away! Look away! Look away!
Dixie Land
Here's to us and those like us; DanG few of us left!

Yes,  You cannot forget Dixie as well. 8)

Nice to hear the one from New Zealand, Trev. :)

Let here the anthem from the other countries represented here as well.  I know in Canada it is 'Oh Canada'  but I do not know the words to it.  Just hear it often on baseball games and at local games since we are on the border.

O Canada

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free !
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

The Maple Leaf Forever

In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave,
Our boast, our pride
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

[CHORUS]
The Maple Leaf
Our Emblem Dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever

[CHORUS]

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever

In Elementary school we also sang God Save the Queen.

Paul H,

Can you give us an history on the two anthems and were they are used the most?

Your main one is now the Star Spangled Banner.

Dixie was the anthem of the south during the civil war.  It is still heard down there to this day.  It was a black war(The Civil War) of our history although it had good intentions.

Trev,
I really like the NZ anthem and the music is way cool too  :)

Paul,
Many a summer I stood with my Canadian brothers singing your anthem ( O Canada ) while attending a summer camp outside of Orillia, Ontario on Lake Simco.  Most of the boys were from Toronto.

There is yet a third American anthem.  It is 'This Land is Your Land' by Woody Guthrie.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin'  -  I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side  .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Chorus (2x)

This song was written in response to Irving Berlin's 'God Bless America' during the huge dust storms just before our great depression I think.

OWW,

Here is the version of "This Land is your land" that we sang when we were kids.I was in my teens before I realised it was originally an American song  :)

"This land is your land, this land is my land,
From Bona Vista to Vancouver Island,
From the Arctic Circle to the Great Lakes waters;
This land was made for you and me."

Farmerdoug,

I took the easy way out and let Google help me with the essay you asked for ;)

God Save the Queen (Royal Anthem of Canada)
O Canada (National Anthem of Canada)
The Maple Leaf Forever (Sometimes referred to as the 'Unofficial Canadian Anthem')

Here are some decent links as well that will take you as deep as you want to dig.

Good call Ernie,

Here's the Maori version, I couldn't spell it all so I had to search it up.

E Ihoa Atua,
O nga Iwi Matoura,
Ata whaka rongona;
Me aroha noa.
Kia hua ko te pai;
Kia tau to atawhai;
Manaakitia mai
Aotearoa

Ona mano tangata
Kiri whero, kiri ma,
Iwi Maori Pakeha
Repeke katoa,
Nei ka tono ko nga he
Mau e whakaahu ke,
Kia ora marire
Aotearoa

Waiho tona takiwa
Ko te ao marama;
Kia whiti tona ra
Taiawhio noa.
Ko te hae me te ngangau
Meinga kia kore kau;
Waiho i te rongo mau
Aotearoa

Tona pai me toitu;
Tika rawa, pono pu;
Tona noho, tana tu;
Iwi no Ihoa.
Kaua mona whakama;
Kia hau te ingoa;
Kia tu hei tauira;
Aotearoa

Same music just different language, great when two very different cultures can say the same thing to the same piece of music and both fit just right.

Some folks in the Volunteer state think this is their anthem...................they mostly live East of me.   ;D

Wish that I was on ole rocky top,
Down in the tennessee hills.
Ain't no smoggy smoke on rocky top,
Ain't no telephone bills.

Once there was a girl on rocky top,
Half bear the other half cat.
Wild as a mink, sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that.

Rocky top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Once two strangers climbed on rocky top,
Lookin' for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come back from rocky top,
Guess they never will.

Corn won't grow at all on rocky top,
Dirt's too rocky by far.
That's why all the folks on rocky top
Get their corn from a jar.

Rocky top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Now I've had years of cramped up city life,
Trapped like a duck in a pen.
Now all I know is it's a pity life
Can't be simple again.

Rocky top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Thanks Big Trev

Kinda gives me a funny feeling at the All Black tests when the anthem is sung in English and Maori followed by an enthusiastic haka.  It's just as well the haka isn't translated into english. ;D

Even though I've lived in NZ for 35 years, I still stand for my Canadian National Anthem. 8) 8)

I had ta join in...

Well, it was AUSTRALIA DAY on Friday, so this was well heard around the place.

My kids both stand and sing when they hear it and that sure makes the heart swell.

The lyrics are:

    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history's page, let every stage
    Advance Australia fair!
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    "Advance Australia fair!"

    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who've come across the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    "Advance Australia fair!"

During the National Hockey League playoffs last spring, the fans in Edmonton were singing along to Oh Canada so the singer stopped and held the mic up. The fans loved it and really got into the singing. Some sourpuss in management ordered him to stop doing that much to everyone's disgust. >:(

Read more here: America the Beautiful

Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

Oh beautiful, for pilgrims' feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!

Oh beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
'Til all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine!

Oh beautiful, for patriot's dream
That sees, beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

Good work.  I attributed the wrong title to Irving Berlin's 'God Bless America' in my previous post.  I corrected it.

Did anyone else hear Hillary Clinton try and sign our national anthem recently?  She didn't know the words so instead of hummin' along she kinda made some up.  I'm sure you can find more details (if your so inclined).  Just Kinda funny that a presidential hopeful doesn't know it when I bet you could ask any number of immigrants to sing it for you and get good results.

PS - I'm not assuming a political stance with this.  Its just an observation I made earlier today and fits with this discussion.

Make it a safe day.

With the vocal range and quality of her voice I give her high marks for at least making the attempt.  Man, that hurt my ears though :D
