The Michigan Chapter of the Association of Consulting Foresters (MACF) was recognized as the 2011 Chapter of the year this week at the National ACF Convention held in New Orleans, LA.  The award is given annually to the State chapter that displays the highest level of commitment to the promotion and practice of professional consulting forestry.  This year was unique as it is the first year that Stihl Chainsaws sponsored the $750 award.

Four MACF members made the journey deep into the hot/humid south.  While at the conference they promoted the State of Michigan and learned about what it takes to put on an event of this size and quality.  The 2012 National ACF Convention is to be held in Grand Rapids, MI next June, in which MACF is hosting.

Congratulations to all members of MACF!  You all deserved it!

INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FORESTS EVENT

As you are aware, the United Nations declared 2011 to be the International Year of Forests. In recognition of this, the Michigan State University Department of Forestry is co-hosting a two-day workshop, October 24-25 at the MSU Union, on sustainable forestry and economic development: http://www.for.msu.edu/goes/index.html.

Put this workshop on your calendar, register and attend!

For the workshop, there will be foresters from around the world (many are MSU Forestry alumni) and from Michigan who will address many facets of sustainability and development. You can sign up for the conference, lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and dinner on Monday evening...all at no cost to you. We need the formal registration so that the correct number of meals are ordered.

These sessions will provide opportunities for you to meet the speakers. Attend as much of the program as possible. If you sign up, we will have a name tag for you.

There is also a Sunday evening program organized by the Greater Lansing Area United Nations Association (cost ~$30).

If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Larry Leefers (leefers@msu.edu; 517-333-8850).

USFS Firewood Workshop

Hi Folks Interested in Forestry, Sawmills and Firewood-

I wanted to inform you of the outreach effort on the part of the US Forest Service to support the growth of the firewood industry in the US.  The USFS is sponsoring an educational and networking one day workshop at the Wood Education and Resource Center in Princeton, West Virginia on Thursday, September 27th, 2012 that will discuss the firewood industry from the forest to the burning in wood stoves.

The firewood industry is growing but experiencing lots of challenges in trying to remain affordable while seeking new technologies that will allow for better burning and lower emissions.

This workshop is part of an outreach effort at the Wood Education and Resource Center that has hosted a series of forest and wood products workshops in 2011 and 2012.  Our project website is www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.  These workshops have focused on small sawmills and the value added products like cabinets, furniture, millwork and firewood.  Past workshops that include information about small sawmill businesses have the lecture slideshows and handouts as pdf downloads.  A related Local Wood Products Marketing project has additional information and recordings of wood products marketing webinars at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/usalocalwood.

You are invited to attend the Profitable Firewood Processing Workshop.  The cost is $35 per person and includes handouts and a buffet lunch.  The workshop brochure and registration form can be found at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.  The WERC is located at 301 Hardwood Lane in Princeton, WV at Exit 14 on Interstate 77 just north of the VA/WV state line.  If you cannot attend, you can see the workshop slide shows and handouts after the workshop as they will be posted on the project website.

This workshop will take place one week ahead of the Paul Bunyan Show in Ohio where Sawmill Magazine hosts the Firewood Shootout where several firewood processors will compete on how fast and well they can process logs into split firewood.  Also being shown is a firewood dry kiln in operation that is fired with split firewood.  Information about the Paul Bunyan Show can be found at http://www.ohioforest.org/?page=pbsshowfacts.

This email is a one time announcement and please contact me if you need additional information.  Sawmill Magazine will run articles in the future on the topics discussed at the Firewood Workshop.

If you are involved in firewood please take one of the five surveys at www.cnr.ncsu.edu/woodworkshops.

Thank you,
