How does one go about re-setting the computer to a date before there was a problem ??

Somehow, the XP firewall allowed a bunch of crap on my hard drive, AGAIN  >:( >:( >:(

I am no expert on these DanG things but maybe all you can do is run your anti virus and maybe an anti spyware like adware se. I would also go to Tools>Privacy and clear the cookies. You will then need to re log on to your favorites.

Fla._Deadheader,
Go to the start button lower left of screen.
Go to "All Programs".
Go to "Accessories".
Go to "System Tools".
Go to "Systems Restore".
Good Luck,

I have Anti-virus, spyware, adaware, underwear and any other ware you can run. It didn't clean up, OR, the web is so slow, I may as well sell the computer and use the phone.

There's a new worm Virus, that hitch hikes on your e-mail (Yahoo in my case), and runs out from your address book.

Reason I think I have problems, other than dead slow internet, is, cursor over the connection icon at the lower right of the screen, and bytes sent might be 350,000, bytes received, 4,790,000. Modem looks like Christmas tree with flashers on it.  ::) ::) ::)

  Thanks, ledlieLogs

I suffer from computer ignorance. I can generally figure out how to make a program work, but fixin it is another thing. Fortunately I have a Best Buy just up the road. The Geek Squad there did a good job, not free or cheap but I trusted them. They suggested Norton and Spyware for protection. The two programs do two different things. I try to run each every couple of weeks. The things that pop up are not always what I'm looking for. Was looking for crawfish and found a porn site. Now, if anyone saw me @ 265 lbs., bibbed Libertys from Walmart, they would know I was after "food." What those two things have in common I'll never know. Just ran both today. Nothing found. Looks like your going in the right direction Deadheader. Hoped to fix your woes as your log arch design fixed mine.

Another thing to do is clear all your old files

GOTO

START
ALL PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
DISK CLEANUP

This will help some.

I'd suggest updating and running your virus software a few times during this mess.  Sometimes those little buggers can hide pretty well and virus software isn't a 100% solution no matter what they tell you.   Adaware and other privacy software are excellent to remove spyware software from your computer, which can really slow internet browsing to a crawl.

Worst case scenario.  Might have to reinstall everything to a wipes hard drive.

Get yourself Nortons system works or System Mechanic. Let either one do it's job. Set it up to run automatically everyweek.
Also get a anti virus program. Nortons is good.

Harold,

I use This Tool (Advanced System Optimizer) to get the most from my machine. It has been working for me.
A real computer person may say not to mess with it but for me it has been worth every last dime paid.

I've got the XP firewall, AVG Virus, AVG spyware and use Trend-Housecall, although, this time, there was so much crap, Housecall could not update the files with the very slow connection. Spyware found 93 infections, including a worm. Ran it today while going to the City. Returned to find the machine shut off.  ::) ::) ::)

  Virus scan today found nothing.

Running spyware right now. Got 7 infections right now, including "dropper.agent.aea". Shown as "high risk". Rest are "Tracking cookies".

Wish I could get my hands on the morons that cause this stuff.  >:( >:( >:(

Poked around in USER folder. Found all sorts of crap.  >:( >:( >:(

Looks like 1 is all it takes, to allow the rest to come on in.  >:( >:( >:(

Gonna poke around some more. Problem is, don't know what I am looking at, and hate to delete something that might cause the puter to go wacky(er).  ::) ::)

Running another spyware scan. Tracking Cookie:Doubleclick, and that Dropper.agent.aea is still in the files. Deleted and quarantined after the last scan. Gotta be a way to get them outta here.  ::) ::)

Harold,
It only cleans up what it finds, it doesn't stop them from coming back.  It's a good idea to run one of those scans every day.  I usually do it before I shut down.  The more you surf the net, the more prevalent they become. :)

Why doesn't the software catch these things ?? I have it down to 2, the ones I just mentioned.

I went to Woodworkers mag website, for online plans to build bunkbeds. That's all it took.  ::) ::) ::)

Um, double click is the forum cookie. ;)
It comes back when you open a page on the forum.
It's harmless as are a lot of them, knowing what are and aren't harmless is the hard part.

Dont stress about the tracking cookies, most sites that have banner adverts will drop a cookie to your machine. It wont harm your PC at all, but it does give the advertising company a way to track you across the web. When you download another advert from another site they can ID your PC again and file this info away in the big box of data. Then they can see what sites people visit, what their other interests are and make their adverts even more annoying  ::)

Obviously this annoys a lot of people, so anti-spyware software just deletes these cookies on general principle. It makes you feel happy that the software actually did something, but thats about it.

But stuffing up the ad companies data collection is a good enough reason to delete em  ;D

I used to have all the same problems until I switched to mozilla firefox for my browser. That was 2 years ago and I have not had any, I stress any problems at all. I was ready to quit using the internet with that danG internet explorer. It is a free and painless download. I swear that when I used to run the antispyware that there would be a huge battle going on inside and it wasn't always clear who was winning. Joe
