Anybody had any luck keeping the black bears from tearing up their feeders?

I'm looking for some ideas on best mounting solution to keep black bears from getting to my feeder.  I've thought about using some electric fence around the base of the tree to keep them from getting up the tree, stringing a cable between two trees and then hang the feeder from the middle of the cable, and have also thought about putting up a tee shaped post with 2ft section of spikes about 8ft up the post so the bear will hit the spikes with his paw.

I also saw a metal post design on another website, but not sure whether a bear can climb the metal post or not?  I would think it could if he was very determined.

I'm kind of leaning toward the spike design using lengths of rebar driven into the post and sharpened with my grinder, but don't really want to hurt the bears - just deter them.

Your thoughts?

I took a 55 gal drum and cut 1 x 2 vertical slots around it about 3" from the bottom.
Cut  only the top and bottom and one side of the slot and them bend it inward apx 90 degrees. Oh yea, cut 5 or 6 slots.
Then I cut a plywood disc to fit the inside of the barrel with a 4" hole in the center, set it on the bent in part of the slots. The corn flows thru the 4" hole to the bottom of the barrel and only the turkeys can fit their head in the slots to get the corn. Deer and bear are out of luck. Of course, for bear you have to Really anchor it to a couple of HEAVY posts. I'll try to post some pictures, but the camera is out of commission right now.

Sounds like an interesting idea - I may try that one on my next feeder.

I currently have a store bought feeder with timer/dispenser that I am trying to hang and keep the bears off of.

The bears will be gone, but you'll need twice as much turkey food! ;)

We string a cable between two trees at least 15 feet off the ground. We put a small loop in the middle of the cable and hang a pulley from that. We run our feeder cable through that pulley then over to another puley attached to the tree at the cable height then down to our winch which is nailed to the tree. We slide a piece of 1 inch PVC over the cable that goes up the tree to keep the bears from shaking it and the feeder. Never had a bear get one since we started doing it that way although they sure try.

YIKES!   Run!  I knew Tom was a big eater, and I know Reina is a dish, but Harold, you gotta be a bit tough, seems like Tom could just cook up a couple of those big steaks instead.

That is exactly why I was asking for some input, as I had remembered seeing this picture of the high wire bear.  I'm thinking more along the lines of rigging the cable setup and then configuring some electric fencing somehow to zap the rascal if he tries to go up the tree.  The only problem now is figuring out how to set up the electric fencing without it ever failing  ;).  I know some beekeepers that use electric fences to successfully keep the bears out of their hives, that is when the fence is working.

My luck the DanG fence will zap me more than it will the bears ;D .

That was my point......... it would work great, but still take twice as much turkey food with Jeff sitting there! ;D

Question about that cable rig.  ???  Suppose there was a few pieces of PVC Pipe slipped over that cable. It would roll with each paw grasp?? Bear could NEVER crawl out on it, EH ???
