Hi folks, i am wanting to make a cedar log bed.  i have plenty of logs, but most have a lot of taper, i would like to make them a bit more uniform in size, like putting them on a giant lathe.  how do post mills make their posts?  any help would be great!!

I'm not so sure you can, and achieve the result you're looking for.  You could reduce those tapered logs in any number of ways, but you'll never achieve the same look as the natural surface that is left when the bark peels off.  It'd probably be better to look for some more suitable logs, or saw the cedar into boards and build a bed from that.  I bet it would be pretty. :)

Try this link for a thread just started on fence posts.

This link from that thread is to a machine that will do what you want.

Another option is the lathe mizer from Wood Mizer.

Like DanG said, none of these will keep the natural look of a peeled log.
For that, you just have to hunt high and low for the straightest logs with the least amount of taper.

I am not reak familiar wit cedar, but could you go higher up in the tree and get away from some of the butt swell. For the frame of the bed you will only need 4-6 logs if you have several to choose from try to find some close to the same size. Any turning you do will detract from the appearance.
