Storing logs in water

I'll be cutting pine, paper birch, and red alder this winter and may be able to store them in a 2'-3' pond as I cut them to prevent drying and stain till perhaps well after the spring thaw. Is this a good idea or are there problems doing that to the hardwoods?

Randall,  I don't have experience with this, but I read discussion once that indicated the once common practice of storing logs in ponds may now be banned in some areas due to environmental concerns.
