Hi everyone! Great site that you have here! This is my first post. Just wanted to add to the above post. I and some co-workers attended a 4 day "chain/thinning saw for the casual user" course at NBCC last fall.
Excellent course with very knowledgable instructors. I highly recommend this college for any type of forestry training.

Hey Pete!!

Sure, I will spread it around. Found this site from another forum that I frequent. I am not into the forestry business myself but know quite a few that are.
I work for the DOT and our guys operate chain/thinning saws occasionally. We want to make sure that they have good quality training and are provided with good information.
A wealth of information here. Looking forward to participating in the discussions.

I would be shy too if I was an NB Forester  8)

Just wondering if the ol' Forester vs. Technician rivalry is still going on back there.  Its better here in Alberta were both of the organizations merged and we are all considered professionals with stamps, as it should be.

Oh, well you know. The technicians still think their 6 months of cramming at College , now 12, is somehow superior to University. Trouble is, most the employers hire the techs because they wages are lower. And I'll have to admit that some of the stuff they get involved in is easily handled by a technician, often they have more experience. Foresters have big chests and egos ya know and technicians don't mind shoot'n them down. ;D :D

Thats why I like the western Canadian approach where its puts everyone on the same playing field.  Most Forestry jobs now in western Canada (especially Alberta) are listed as a RFP (Registered Forest Professional) and either an RPF or RPFT can bid on them.  As such you do not need a degree to sign off a submission, both can do it.  ;)

My training at MFRS was 12 months  8) , however they have since changed it to 2 years I believe.  Nonetheless, you are likely right about the wage thing back east being true, however thats not the case out here.  For anyone reading these links, Forest Professionals have a lot of opportunity out here right now both in Government and Forest Industry which compete with the oil patch.  As you know, an environmental technician is not far off from a forest professional and the oil patch likes to scoop them up as they already know how  to work.

I think I am going to enjoy this forum as new acquaintances will be made.  I will have a photo library up sometime this week of our companies operations, as we do full tree portable chipping in our cut blocks (no delimbing necessary) and load directly into super b high volume chip trailers.

I say 6 and 12 because your not there a whole 12 months out of a year. Thinking about it again, it's more like 8 and 16 months for the 1 yr, vs 2 years now. ;)

As far as I'm aware there are some things a Tech can sign off on, but there are a lot they can not. In BC the RPF association is a regulated body by law and your audited every 3 years by your peers and you have to show that your continuing your education in forestry. Here in the Maritimes, there is no regulation by RPF let alone peer review. It's more of an old boys club. Although, you are expected to continue studies here, I don't think it's mandatory. That and other reasons is why I'm not interested in joining it here. You write some test, pass and are in the club? No thanks.

Wow! – Flame-on thread!  :D ;D
How nice!

By the way, I know some foresters, that are not as good as they should be…
While a know a few technicians, who are far ahead…

But then, I can guess why SwampDonkey is so jealous.
I mean it!

@SwampDonkey:
That’s right!
Long live forestry folklore!!!  ;D ;D :D

@Samuel:
Ok. But don’t accept it as a general rule!
Because it’s not like that!
Or at least, try walking in Swamp’s shoes!  ;)

Then again: best regards  to everyone!  :)

This training at NBCC looks very similar to the program I am involved in developing through WOLF (Woodlands Opportunity Learning Foundation) (http://www.w-o-l-f.ca/index.cfm) that we have started through the Northern Lakes College in Slave Lake.  The intent of the participant when they are completed, they will have a logging technician program that would give them the skill set for a logging supervisor, equipment operator, or such.

We are still developing some courses and our focus in mostly on environmental training right now, but we do have 1/2 dozen or so simulators that give students hours in seats for equipment.

Samuel a question for you. Chainsaw/faller certification in Alberta, where can i read about it? Who offers it?A friend of mine said he is going to Red Deer to get his tomorrow. A one day quiz? He has been falling for himself for forty years, I suggested they could not beat his bad habits out of him in a month let alone an afternoon! He has suggested that I take the couse with him as well and go falling pine beetle kill with him.

Hey Sawdust.  I searched around the OH & S website and found nothing on Chainsaw Certification.  I am not sure it is legislated Provincially in Alberta but I know that there is a lot of places that give the training.  The Norther Lakes College in Slave Lake offer the course so give them a call, as they may be able to help you out.

Hey JJ, did you go to school with a fellow named Jeff Morrison?  He started forestry engineering in 98 I think, dropped out and went into straight forestry in 99-2000 then dropped out altogether.  He was a good friend growing up and he now is a stationary engineer working for NB Power in Saint John.

Worked with a tech nambed Tyson at the Acadia Experimental Station one summer that when through similar training at NBCC in Marimichi and he only had good things to say about the program back in 98. I am sure there has been inprovements since then. Brian at Acadia was also a tech.  Never meet a tech that was not worth his weight in gold in the field.

Slowzuki I recognize the name, and think I can put a face to it.  Did he have a goatee back then and wear his hair very short?  I started in For Eng in 95 and switched to straight forestry in the summer of 06 after working long days planting and going to school two nights a week for math courses.

I worked out in Acadia in '89. You talking about Brian Ackerly? Probably not, he retired in 1990 I think. We were all over the Maritimes that summer actually. ;D

Yeah I worked that western half of NS with NSP (power company) in 2000, had many of tics, many many of ticks. Some days you could just see them waiting for you to walk down the right of way, pants with drawstings on the cuffs where mandatory.  Think we may have brought a few to NB in our laundry.  I do remeber a good german restraunt in Bridgewater, thanks for bringing these memories back to the surface.
