I`m getting ready to put a metal roof on my shed (the one in Jack Sobon`s book).
The rafters are 4x6, 2'o.c. The roofing is 29 gage Everlast 2.
Do I need to use plywood sheathing under the metal roof, or can I just use horizontal purlins fastened to the rafters? If purlins are ok what size lumber should I use?

Thanks

I'd discuss that with the metal roofing company or an installer.

But with my sawmill shed roof, I just used 1x4 pine boards 2' on center from eave to ridge, and my rafters were 16" on center.....

Hope this helps...

My steel roofing (24ga) is rated for purlins 4' OC under CTs rather moderate snow load standards.  Other steel roofing may have a problem w/ Jim's 2' OC, I'd check the specs at Everlast and see what they reccomend.

Many people around here use 1 x 4 on 30 inch spacing with rafters on 24" centers. I use 24 inch spacing on purlins with rafters on 24 inch centers. But we don't have to figure a significant snow load here. I did build one shed using 2 x 4 purlins and it was more solid but overall I don't think it bought me that much.
