Milled an 8' x 20" (avg) Russian Olive today.  The neighbor lady at the top of the block had it taken down and I boomed it out.  Sawed it up right in the alley.   8)

Gotta love having a sawmill ;D

My Alaskan is on my short list for the "Coolest Things I've Ever Owned".  It's amazing what can come your way, and what you find in it.  Like you said, it's a treasure hunt.

BTW, a 3120 makes a great mill head, doesn't it.  Modded my bars from my 066, got the adapter from Cannon, so the transition was the $15 I paid for the adaptor and the time I had in it.  Now I can take my 066 for bucking and felling, but still use it as a back-up milling saw if need be.

I did some 10" walnut with the 066...I wish the 30+ stuff milled that fast.

So many trees, so little money, even less time.

Yeah, I'm begining to love that saw more and more the more I use it.  Once I figured out the sweet spot it was like a hot knife through butter.  I'm gonna get a 32" setup, I've got a 56" right now, but rarely use more than 30 of that.

How did that Russian olive flitch turn out that you sawed?

Picked up some cut-up blocks from a tree recently, and was told it was Russian olive (not Autumn olive).

This is the pic you posted previously.

After over 3 years, I was finally able to get back to Burlkraft's and finish my bowl.  :)

Had great fun finishing it up. It is unbelievably light.

That looks really good. I've never worked with Olive of any kind.

I'm also wondering why you hurried back so soon.  ;D

POSTON WIDEHEAD

Never heard of Russian Olive.

Is this a "high dollar" wood?

Sure looks nice.

My dad has a few miles of shelter belts with Russian Olive in alot of them. He lives in North Central Montana just outside of Havre, MT and it seems to grow most anyplace up there that has water or any protection. The only problem that I see with it is that it grows fairly gnarly and the thorns can be a real pain.  :) But for bowls and small projects, gnarly makes good wood  ;D

I like the way these trees smell in the summer. Very distinct odor.

that is a beautiful bowl, the grain really turned out nice with the finish... since i assume your planning on using it for food did you just use an olive oil finish on it?

bandmiller2

I never knew they got that big, around here their planted along highways and just seem to stay brush size.I'd say that was an extra virgin olive chunk made a handsome bowl.Did anyone see "how its made" they showed how their made with specialized machinery,Many bowls from the same chunk each a little smaller than the one before.
