Hi All,

I finally dougged my spring out 2 weekends ago. I placed a 45 plastic barrel in the ground. the spring is coming out of hill in 2 places so what I did was place the barrel out 8ft down the hill...sunk it about 2ft in the ground. I install a piece of eavesthroufing from where the 2 springs come together to the barrel...works great i'm catching 100% of the water supply.

Now my question. I would like to install some type of screen on top of the barrell to keep, insects, worms, stuff like that out of the barrel.

Any suggestions on what type of screen? the water will be going through the screen has the piece of eavesthroufing is just sitting on the top of the barrel!

thanks for any suggestions
PS. got 200 feet of pipe ran, going to lay 400ft today...only 400ft more to go!

sbishhop,

A quick search with Google and I found these companies.  I would go with a stainless steel screen at has about 1/32 openings - one of them had a "20 mesh" that meet this requirement.

Submarine, you think they would be something else that is easyly available from harware store? what about material for a screen door? you think it would last?

In all my travels thru many a hardware store, big box and Mom & Pop, I haven't seen any stainless steel wire cloth.  I don't think aluminum or nylon would hold up to the environmental elements.

The best I have found was hardware cloth with 1/4 holes in it, at the blue big box store.  And that was only once.

I think I'd go with ordinary aluminum screen wire.  It should last a couple of years or more, and would be cheap to replace.

I'd like to see pics, too.  Is this a gravity feed system, or are you using a pump?

After awhile wont algae build up on the screen and block it if the climate is warm?

Would it be better to cover the entire barrel and inlet to keep debris out rather than try to screen it out after it gets into the system?

No matter what size screen wire you use, the junk will build up and plug up the screen or be totally ineffective. You will need some type of self cleaning screen.
