I think I am about to step on a snake every time I see one of these...Does any one know what it is? They are much lighter in color before drying out. Location east  TN.

How 'bout some hints. Where do you find them, in the woods? What kind of trees nearby, conifers or deciduous?

I see them in the woods, mostly hardwoods ( oak hickory) but there are a few white pines around. this one had come up beside a stack of lumber I have drying in the woods.

That's the whole plant " above ground" stem was something like a mushroom when I first pulled it up out of the leaves.
