I slept on Ixta (a extinct volcano) outside Mexico City while her sister Popo began spewing lava, Red glowing rocks, and ash. This was about 1994. The summits were only about 15 miles apart. We had to egress down the mountain right between the two. We also slept at 14,000' with a hut full of troubled teens next to us. Myself and the director slept outside on the ground. I kept waking up watching the show, not fun (I am a hobbist Geologist, no one really knows when thing could get ugly). My only consulation was that at least she was venting and not building pressure. Additionally, during the night a mouse/rat ran right over my face(the only thiing showing outside my mummy bag). I jumped up. Hour later the DANG thing got in the opening and INTO the bag. I never moved soo fast. Collectively, it was a night I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!. PS. due to a great acclimitazation schedule we all (16 people) summited, the Royal English AF party didn't!!

By the way, my picture was taken from the hotsprings at Los Lagos.

Yes Jeff - it is on the trip plans! I figure you all are going to need it after being drug in my wake for a few days.  ;)

Is it considered bad luck to take a chunk of lava souvenir from Arenal like it is from Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii?

Don't really know. The LAVA side of the Volcano, looks more like a gravel slide, than a lava flow. ???

Furby, you would be a roasted one before you got to the top.  :o

I have never heard it was a problem to take a little lava here - it isn't like the Ticos aren't supersticious, it is that the whole area is the result of volcanic action. Plenty of rocks if you want on.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

Speaking of weirdness - take a look at this picture.

It is a river just a little North of Guatuso. No, that isn't polution, nor is my camera acting up.

It is much more vivid in person - and if you are willing to hike in a ways (2 to 3 hours) you can see a waterfall that is this color!

So, how did I end up here anyway?

Tom

we have clay bottomed ponds here that are that color.  I'm told that it comes from the lime.  Don't really know. :-

Pretty, isn't it.
