All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

You got it, Jeff ;D

It's the swirl and undulations of the wood that intrigue me more than the knot.

I really like seeing what's under the bark but peeling is hard work  :)

Now see here, Sprucebunny.   You can't be a sawyer and keep looking at all that pretty stuff.  You'll never make any production.   I know.  I don't make any production either.  :D :D

:D :D And I get distracted so easily, Tom :D Is that why I;m so slow ???

I could stare at wood grain all day and the wood just under the bark is SO sensuous (sp) ;D

Lets tame it down a little with some wild northern white cedar.  This is what the posts on Tammy's little cabin looks like.

Do you know what causes the markings, Jeff ???

Is the dark areas where the innermost layer of bark was/is still on the log ???

The cambium on W. Pine oxidizes and darkens very quickly.

Spalting is the "beginning" of rot and is cased by a white rot fungus.  The dark lines are borders of competeing fungus' or the outline of the white fungus colony.

Underneath the bark.

Then ya get little deeper.

And where did this come from?

#1 I see in cypress a lot.  It always reminds me of the center of a carrot.  Have you ever eaten the outside of a carrot and tried to leave the inside?  It has stuff like that on it.

# 2  Looks like a cut through a crotch cut as a pair of pants.

# 3  looks like a crotch where the limbs are laying  vertical on a horizontal bandmill.  You don't get but one or two boards out of a cut like this.

:-\ ???   How close am I?

Larry

Walnut loose's its bark easily at this time of year.  The scars over old branches are really interesting.

Both are crotches sawn with the "pants" leg laid flat down.  First is black walnut and the second is white oak.

The walnut crotch has a wider range of color than what my digital camera can capture.  The white sapwood is a little washed out in the picture.
