Anybody else have one of these? I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea after doing a "sleep study" at the hospital, had to sleep with all these electrodes hooked up to me.  They monitored my sleep and found I either stopped or slowed my breathing over 40 times in one hour. So, I was prescribed this CPAP machine, which is basically a small air compressor hooked up to a mask you wear on your nose.  It keeps a little air pressure on your airway, which keeps you breathing smoothly. In fact, my wife says it has eliminated my snoring.  I feel a lot better, I was always so groggy before, always falling asleep on the couch, even in the middle of conversations sometimes- like an old man :). Glad to see there was actually something wrong and I'm not just a lazy bum like I was starting to wonder :D

I have a friend with the same diagnosis and he was prescribed a mask like that.  It's supposed to keep a positive pressure of air on you.  He says he sleeps like a baby now.

My wife has one.  She always snored but after she had Zach it got really BAD.  I told her several times she needed to do some about it but she claimed she didn't snore ::)  One weekend she went downstate with her family and bunked with her little sister who told her what it was all about.  She still didn't go to the Dr and it seemed to get worse.  I had to go to bed and fall asleep first or I ended up sleeping on the couch.  If I woke up in the night I would have to go elsewhere to fall back to sleep :(  I would hear her actually quit breathing and wake up all of which she didn't remember and she still refused to believe anything was really wrong.  Sometimes I would even shake her to get her going again ::)  Still nothing was amiss >:(.  Finally one night when it was at its worst she woke up and I woke her up the rest of the way and in no uncertain terms told her that unless she made an appointment with a sleep specialist and got some treatment she was going to go to bed one night and not get up again.  She really didn't sleep the rest of that night and had an appointment the next day.  After her stay at the sleep center the nurse asked her how many times she thought she woke up that night.  Three was her reply.  The nurse grinned and told her she was waking up an average of 54 times an hour :o ::)  She sleeps normally now and gets up easier and doesn't have trouble with falling asleep during the day.  That goes for me too ;D  I didn't realize the extent her disorder was having on me :o

Barbender, did you have to have a doctor's prescription to get the CPAP machine?
How's everybody doing out in cyberspace?

I have a CPAP and I needed a prescription in NH. If anyone is having trouble with extreme snoring or poor nights sleep, please see a doctor. Its a more common problem than you might think. Sleep apnea can shorten your life. Also my wife sleeps much better now that I have the machine.

I realized I had this problem about 5 years ago. I prolly suffered for 10 years without knowing why the heck I was so tired all the time.

I started using Breathrite nazal strips, and it changed my life, cause I wasn't getting any air at night.

Now I use these:

I sleep well and get plenty of air and rest.

I have used a CPAP machine for about 3 years now, and I LOVE it.

I used to be tired all the time, and used to have to have a nap after lunch, oh, but I never snored ;) :D

It keeps a positive pressure through my lungs all night, and boy oh boy I can tell if I've forgotten to wear it.

If I forget, I wake up at 4am (invariably!) and I have a headache and dreadful dry sore throat (from not snoring).

I had the sleep study, and it found that I was waking up lots during the night and never *really* falling asleep properly.

I'd recommend anyone who falls asleep easilly, or who wakes up in the morning tired goes and gets tested, the problem is really a lot more common that people think.

CPAP get a yes vote from me as well.  Wife calls it the snoremaster and I get a solid nudge if I neglect to use it :D :D :D

I also got it with a prescription as medical insurance was part of the payment plan.  I wonder if the next time I will need an Rx?  If I am willing to pay cash, what does a Rx buy me or the company selling the machines?

It has been two years now.  I really appreciate sleeping and dreaming and not feeling zonked!  Wife appreciates it as well.

Yeah, I had to do the sleep study and get a prescription for the CPAP machine.  I've been surprised lately by how many people have these machines, wish I would've known aqbout them before.  Oh well- I'm sleeping good now..

Dee had to have a referral from her Dr. for the sleep study and the Dr there wrote the Rx after it was done.  She's been back once to make sure everything was working write and to have the machine adjusted.

UNCLEBUCK

I know of 2 men locally that have died in bed from sleep apnea and their wives couldnt believe it . The men were no older than early 30's .

When I was truckin I made sure I slept on my side because after a long day and night I would lay down for awhile and fall asleep and a minute later jump up like I was falling off a cliff type feeling from overtired.

This machine that barbender now has and a bunch of you really seems like something I might ask about someday.

Not someday.

TODAY.

Go to the doc TODAY and get checked. You'll have to go into a sleep centre for a night and they wire you up, it's (not) lots of fun, but it needs to be done.

Seriously, if you have sleep apnoea, you won't know yourself after a week on the machine.

So if a married couple each has a mask on when they go to bed at night then I suppose they just give each other a high five at night instead of the goodnight smooch ?  ;D

Nah, it just means you put it on 'later'  ;)  I guess. Not that I'd know, since I'm not married...

Heliocopter just picked up my buddy up here couple of weeks ago with a mild heart attack. He's OK now but the problem was his sleep apnea, weakening his heart for years and years.

His dad died from a heart attack.  All this from sleeping with no air.

I would suggest you guys spend the 15 bucks and at least get the nose vent thing I wear above, while your waiting for a sleep study.  You won't believe how much better you will feel if you're not breathing at night.

Even if I take an afternoon nap and don't put it on, I wake up feeling drained.  Then I realise I didn't have the thing on.  That's all it takes...  ::) :)

Now that I have a CPAP my Jack Russell won't snuggle with me til morning when I take it off ! My wife sleeps a lot better with me on it , so 1 out of 2 is happy !

I was prescribed a CPAP...I wore it for a couple of weeks. I hated it. I got a SEVERE sinus infection because of the dry air effect on my sinuses. So ... about the same time, I was prescribed Zyrtech for allergies. Guess what? The snoring and Apnea went away  8)

I still have the CPAP, but I will not wear it unless I really need it and not without some humidification.

Missin' loggin', but luvin' the steady check...

I like to read this even if we are not all alike...

My cat settles right in with the "snoremaster" on.  My wife and I kiss good night and I put it on.  Then the nominally quiet motor kicks on and I say "Launch Mode!" It is like riding a rocket to the dream lands.

Finally, I used the humidifier and heater feature then just quit.  Have not used it for a year.  I say "get real" when the instructions are to wash the hose and head piece daily.  I do wash them but it is not every day!

I wonder when my machine will fail and where I'll get another.  I do have insurance but they are still pretty spendy and I am cheap!  Maybe I'll find on on Ebay.  I will wash that machine at least once....ewwww ;) ;) ;)

Having just said I am cheap, I would recommend if you are reading this and you have symptoms of sleep apnea that you spend the money and get the test.  It is much better for your health and your outlook and your life.  Take advantage of modern medicine and get a good nights rest.

Regards from Kendall

The CPAP I have has a little water tank and heater built right into it, so it humidifies the air going you're breathing. Sometimes I forget to fill it with water at night and it goes dry about 3:00 AM. It wakes me right up when it does, sinuses and throat get dried out quick. Kderby, I don't think I've washed mine out yet after about 8 months :o. Haven't suffered any ill effects

Corley5,
Are we married to the same woman? :D  Your post is exactly the story I had to tell. :D :D
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

I'll have to ask her  ;D :) :)
