Went to my friends camp last weekend for some R&R. He had a permit to cut firewood in the state forest. You can only cut trees that are dead and usually there aren't any left close to the road. This year there are quite a few dead oaks.

We couldn't get all of this tree on the truck

Not sure what is killing them but it may be this.

Most likely it was gypsy moth kill or oak leaf roller.

The state won't go in and do any cutting where there are scattered dead trees.  It usually isn't worth the bother when loggers are needed on larger tracts.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I don't think the state would like having me setup in their forest. Didn't read all the fine print on the permit but I'll bet its not permitted for control reasons. ::)
The thing to do would be to bid on some of the state timber sales.???
