I'm sure most of you have been through this before. My eldest daughter,Randi has just turned 16 and has gotten her learners licence yesterday. She has driven with me on logging roads before, and has done fine. She is attentive and doesn't pretend to know it all.She has studied the textbook and has been watching and learning how we drive.I have encouraged her to go for her license, and have offered to drive with as her often as possible.

I dropped her off in town for her test, and went home waiting to pick her up after the hour long exam. She called and told me she passed, and could I meet her in town and let her drive home. :o Yes, of course I would,it would be the logical thing to do.
Well all of a sudden it dawns on me that I will be the passenger of a crewcab, driven by my daughter.I always drive, don't like being driven, have been in a few crashes and rollovers,as a passenger.(been in a couple where I was driving too, lets be fair)
She gets in behind the wheel, and moves the seat ahead(I'm thinking,Hey,don't start changing everything,it's my truck)
I keep my irrational thought to myself(for now) and tell her to head up the valley. She does well, with a few nervous jump starts, and a couple hand on the dashboard brakes, but she is doing well on the whole.

We headed home and other than some square cornering, she did well.Today, even better. She is cornering smoothly, and staying nicely between our huge truck swallowing ditches.I will try hard not to be critical, and stop sucking air as I grab for the wheel. :D
She's doing well,it's me that needs work. One down, four to go.

Paul,

Carrie, our youngest went through that about three years ago.  When I wasn't able to drive after surgery, she was my favorite driver.  I felt completely comfortable.

My wife has a long commute to her teaching job so always claims the newest car as hers.  I don't go much of anywhere so the old car has always been mine (the old escort automatic).  When Carrie started going places on her own,  she started calling it OUR car.

Carrie starts college later this month and is going to Hawaii with our youngest son next week.  She is trying to get everything ready for college before her trip.

Yesterday, she cleaned my stuff out of  HER car.

This sounds just like me.... when my wife drives. ;D

I went out with Randi again today, and she racked up about 30 more miles. She was a little more confident, and we worked on cornering some more.I think she would probably do better with someone else besides her ole dad.I am trying to get her to start turning before the corner, not half way through it :o

So,Noble. What are you going to do for wheels now? ;D Tractor maybe? Sounds like Carrie needed it more than Dad anyway.

I guess I can take the PU but it doesn't have air.  May have to liscense the old DEER STAND II.

Maybe I can ride the motorcycle with a bum arm.  If it didn't kill me my wife would.

I'm getting close to where I think I can use a chainsaw so the only thing I'll be driving for a while is the log truck.

CHARLIE

I remember riding shotgun for both my son and my daughter when they had their learner's permits. They both did just fine but I still remember that when we were on two lane roads and there was an oncoming car, I'd look out the passenger window almost straight down into the ditch. :o :o

I remember like it was yesterday when I had my learning permit, circa 1991.  My Dad was with me in the 1976 Cutlass.  My Dad yelled "STOP SIGN!" :o :o  I replied "WHERE?" :o  Dad"THERE"  That is the shortest distance that I ever stopped a vehicle from 25mph.  The brakes locked up instantly and stopped in about 5-6ft!!! :o :o

Later in the same day I got my license, a little bird met up with the grill of the car.  Poor little thing did not stand a chance. :(

Oh what I've got to look forward to :D ;D :).  It'll be a few years before Zach is driving so I've got some time to prepare don't I? :o  I learned how to drive in my Grandpa Bob's 1974 1 ton 4X4 IHC pickup with a 4sp and a 345 V8 ;).  I was 11 or twelve at the time.  When Dad taught me how to drive his Dodge with the auto it was sorta confusing.  What? no clutch?  Just put on the D and go?  I'd been driving our tractors and Grandpa's for a couple years before I graduated to pickups so I had a pretty good idea what was going on.  When I took drivers ed I only had to drive with the instructor for the minimun two hours rather than six like most others in my group.  Of course I'd already been driving between farms pulling hay wagons and the like and making an occasional trip to town for gas for a couple years.  I'm going to make sure that Zach also has a good headstart on driving before he has to take drivers ed.

CHARLIE

Heck Greg! By the time Zack is old enough to drive we won't be using cars or trucks. We'll all be zipping around in Flying Saucers at 200 to 300 mph. :o :o  You're going to have the ride of your life with Zack at the stick. :o :o :o ;D

I made sure both of my children learned to drive on a stick shift. It was a little more trouble but now they can drive anything. I think it's a shame that driver's education uses automatics. There are so many that can't drive a car unless it's an automatic.....bummer..... ::)

Tom

It used to be in Florida that your drivers license carried an exception if you took your drivers test with an automatic transmission.    A long time ago. :'(

Paul_H

I remember teaching my girlfriend first, and then my youngest sister, how to drive a standard.Shortly afterward,I taught myself how to change a clutch&pressure plate in a
 Ford F-150  :D
I can relate to the ditch view that Charlie mentioned. Our valley floods occasionally, and to help with drainage, the ditches are deep.Like swallow a load of logs, deep. That's why we've been working hard on her cornering. She is doing well for 3 days driving.

Just got to find me some of that patience I hear people talk about :-X

Paul,

I hate to cause you undue stress, but if you think it's rough now; just wait till she starts going places on her own.

I really hate phone calls after bedtime but it was so much worse when the boys were teenagers and had started 'going out'.

The worst was when the phone rang about 10:00 PM.  The fellow gave his name and said he was with the Mo. Highway Patrol.  I was about to panic when I realized that he was trying to solicit money for a fund for widows of patroalmen.  It was probably a worthy cause but the only thing I donated was a piece of my mind.

I was always so relieved when they made it in safe and sound.

They had some minor scrapes but never any injuries to themselves.

Hey--------after driving comes their love lives and problems associated with that.  Being a parent is heavy stuff!  I'm sure the concerns for your children exist as long as you live.

I'm anxious for grandkids-----they are all joy and no problems---right?

My mom told me the way she got her licenses was when my dad went to get his he said "oh yea, give me one for my wife too"

Arkansas has always done things the "right way"
When I was 14 I would drive around picking up chicks (well, wishing) in the Starsky and Hutch Ford Grand Torino.

Waht a funny video! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D  I was laughing so much at times that I could barely eat my sandwich without spewing it on the monitor!

just wait a few seconds for the video to finish downloading, then the video will start and the lines will disappear.

The mention of an International brought back my first memories of "driver's ed". I was 6 or 8,  Granddad drove us out to a big pasture and put the old IHC in granny and told me to keep it between the fences. He and Dad bailed out and got in the back to spread feed and I was king of the road, couldn't touch the pedals, barely could see over the dash and was probably doing about 3MPH  :D.
Last time we were home I gave away one of my old trucks, by all accounts its been having a ball :D.
Shoot, might as well sing the whole song  ;D

You're making those memories.

CHARLIE

Y'all give this link a try. Be patient because it takes a bit of time to load. It's a training video for new drivers. ;D
