Texas Ranger

From a friend.

Supposedly the State of La has this deer now....

A very eventful day around here... A once in many lifetime experience!

I saw this lil' feller run out in front of a car, thought it was a lost Baby goat.
Stopped to get it, and WOW. A real Albino Whitetail Deer.
Just Hours old, but doing fine. No Moma deer around. Another car
nearly hit it in front of Mark...

Well,, he is THE neatest thing any of us ever seen. And such a 'freak
of nature', that only 1 in more than a million are even born. He took his
bottle of food, followed us around the house, doing great. So, we
called the Zoo & Fossil Rim, who were both interested, but going to
send him to a Rehab farm, at a vet that we have never gotten along
with... So, one of Dad's best friends is our Game Warden. Kinda
reluctantly, but, I called Him and told him the deal. He came right
over, of course... and assured me That he couldn't take it to that vet,
that he was going to 'go to higher levels' than that with him..
So, he is gone now. We got a lot of pix, and Something we will never
see again probably, so it was very cool. Maybe he will make it in
captivity somewhere and be appreciated. So rare... Sure wanted to
keep him tho. but, not the thing to do. And not LEGAL either ; But,
here are a couple of pix to show ya. He was snow white, pink eyes,
ears, nose and hooves.
Kids called him POWDER. He was SO small. That is my shoe Lying beside him...
WOW..how cool is that??

We had an albino doe live on the farm we hunted some years ago, word from the farmer was don't shoot her. We respected that and always enjoyed seeing her during bow season. A couple years later a bow hunter down by Des Moines shot a button buck that was albino, got his picture in the paper. Big outcry from the bambi lovers and our morons in the legislature passed a law making shooting an albino deer illegal.

Thanks for sharing that story and picture with us!  I've heard about them, but never actually saw one.   :)

In New York at the Senaca Army depot ( square miles in size) there are many albino deer. We always have to drive by it slowly and look for them. We always see them if we go by around dusk.

Moosehunter,

I remember that. We lived in Ithaca for a couple of years and when we would head up the lake we would see them. Couldn't believe my eyes the first time I saw it.

Of course the cause is inbreeding at the base, it is totally sealed off, so the recessive traits start appearing.

That is a a great picture next to the shoe.
So, how did I end up here anyway?

Wow a rarity indead. Cute little feller. Although my grandfather shot 3 albino deer and we have a picture of one, an albino 10 point buck dressed and hung. Hmm maybe that's not a great picture to invision in this thread.  ;D

When I was managing a large ranch in Central Florida we had two separate populations of "white" or "piebald" deer. They were separated by about 50 miles and the range was a few square miles in each case. Seeing such a deer in low light is memorable, as they have a ghost like appearance. This is a separate condition from albinoism which is a complete lack of pigment. These deer have more white fur than is normally found. They also have other associated characteristics, including shorter than normal front legs. As a rule the more white the deer has, the less healthy they are. The surviability of these deer is lessened. We had an 8 point buck in one area of the ranch. The hunters all agreed to leave him alone. One night a "fire-hunter" got him, and, rumor has it, had a life size mount made. I wanted to do the same to him! >:(
