I hadn't had anybody ask until today. They have some logs and want an estimate on what I'd charge to cut them. If I have a set price / bdft then I should be able to give a fairly good estimate by scaling the logs, correct? Is there a sheet somewhere that tells me what volume is in a log of a certian diameter... better yet haven't I seen guys running around a header with some kind of cheater stick? Where would I get something like that?

Use the Int'l 1/4" log scale (in the Forum toolbox, click on Forum Extras at the upper right) to get a good estimate of the bf volume in your logs, using the scaling (small end) diameter and log length.

The 'stick' you speak of (isn't for cheating  :D ) is likely a log scale stick, and will have the bf volume by log lengths (diameter by placing the stick on the small end) shown. Available from forestry suppliers. Bailey's (a sponsor) has a scale stick, and they are easy to use.

If you want to print one out to give out I have one on http://www.twistedoaksawmill.com select the log scale link, it 356K big so if you dial up it might take a few minutes.

Wood-Mizer prints log and lumber scale on the blade shield.   ::)

If you don't want to go out and get a Wood-Mizer,  then they also have a handy pocket scale that they often give away at shows and demos, etc.

You can also get one through their on-line store for .60 cents.

And the forestry forum is champion, AGAIN!!!

I found out how to save that sawlogs calc right to my PDA so now I have all three scales right there in my hand when I go to visit a customer. Easier to do estimates with that and a yard stick...

Thanks again.

I was thinking the same thing about them scales. If ya got large wood, 14 " top and up there isn't as wide a margin.

Bib, ya have an eye for salesmanship :D

If you want to make yourself a cruising stick (biltmore stick) for determining board feet in a standing log here are a few sites to check out.
