Is the stihl 440 Magnum better than the Husky 372XP?  Because I have the 440 and it is very powerful, but I just wanted to ask because some people tell me that the 372 is better. 8)

That question arises alot of Debate, the most general respose woul probably be the 372, but I would prefer the stihl.

I thought the stihl was better because they have 2 rings on their pistons instead of 1 ring on the piston like husky uses.

Husqvarna is phasing out the 372 and replacing it with a boat anchor called the 575.

IMHO, the 372 was one of the best saws ever to come off of the Husqvarna production line.

I have never owned a 440 Magnum, so I couldn't make a fair comparison between the Stihl & the Husky.

I've owned other Stihl models and see the chainsaws as not much different than the Ford versus Chevy sort of thing.  If you have a good dealer close by, then thats the brand you should go with.

The 372 uses two rings just like the 440. The single ring myth is just more single line Stihl dealer ignorance. BTW, there have been single ring Stihls in the past.

It`s my experience that the 440,460, and 372 are all so close that it could easily come down to picking your favorite colors.

My dealer says the newer huskys have two rings to meet epa!

Sorry, I didn't know that husky started running 2 rings on their saws, Ithought they just ran 1 ring.  I have neaver owned a husky saw.  I Like my stihl MS440. ;D 8)  My dealer sells stihls and huskys, and johndeere.

Quite debating already!
You should all pick your saw like I picked out my wife. Put one of each in a room, turn off the light, grope around in the dark untill you find something that feels the best and use it for life. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

P.S.  Never look back or you may end up getting slapped silly by your first choice.

I own both a 440 Magnum and a 460 Magnum.  There is a major difference in torque and power between the two saws.  The 440 is a high revving fast saw and the 460 is a saw with the grunt to handle large bars.
In one of the cutter training courses I took I had the only stihl saw, my 440.  Everyone else had husky 372s.  The instructor wanted to cut with each saw so he could tell the owner what the saw needed to perform at its max.  He used my saw last.  When he handed it back to me he said "Nice saw. You don't need to do anything to it."  I could tell he was impressed but Husky sponsors the training so he was not going to say much more  :D

OWW- You keep talking like that, and you'll talk me into getting the 440 I want.  I've got the 460, love it, but dang, that 440 is a nice saw too.  It fits nicely between the 361 and 460.  We'll see, I might be putting a ring on a finger before too long, so it may have to wait for a while...or maybe that's a reason to buy it now!

Take care all,
Jeff

I love my MS440 magnum!  It is light and has lots of power and will not bog down in a cut!  I've had it for 4 months, and I love it!  I would reccomend it to anyone.

You are forgetting about the Jonsered 2171 sister saw to the  husky 372 xp, but a whole bunch prettier in red & black.

OWW,

As much as I agree that the 440 is a great saw, I suspect that the instructor was more than likely complimenting you on having your saw set up properly. There is no dust gathering on any properly setup 372 and I`d run one against a 440 any day of the week, in fact I`ll run against a 460 too.  Before anyone gets all blustery and tells me I don`t know what I`m talking about, I`ve had 044s, currently own two 372s and two 460s. These 460 were modified by EHP and are quite extraordinary, otherwise I wouldn`t bother with them. I like the 440 and 372 better and they cut almost as fast, when stock or modified.

Only thing with a husky is that they run the best they do when they come out of the box, and a stihl just keeps running better and better.  I know this from other loggers and me and the dealers, tell me this. :) ;)  I'm sticking to stihl anyway, for the quality! ;) ;D

Yeah, sure, whatever you say.

I would stick with the stihl ms 440 I loved the one I had but I wanted more power so I sold it and got a stihl 066 I wish I still had it. THat was a great saw.
Two Things in life to be proud of a good wife and a good saw.

Buy it now!  Everything changes once the ring goes on! :D

Thanks OWW!  :D  Fortunately, she's a very "chainsaw friendly" gal.  I'll see what I can scrape together!

Jokers,
All depends on the operator and the chain you have on the saw! ;D

Well I can unequivocally say that I can`t build a race chain because I have never tried, but I`ll run my round filed work chain against yours. 8)

Logger,

I think we can all appreciate your happiness with your saw and Stihl, they are great saws....

But I stick to my guns as well and they are painted Husqvarna Orange!
