Grits,  a breakfast staple in the South, is a often-suggested bait for fire ants
who take the little white morsels home to share with their friends,
When they eat grits and drink water, the grits swell up inside them, and they die.
Sprinkle uncooked grits on and around ant mounds.
When I read this last night in a gardening book , I had to laugh & think of the
Forestry Forum.  :D  :D  :D

First you couldn't toss rice at weddings....now no grits tossing either, what's this world coming too. :D

OI!

See, I was suspicious when someone in another thread suggested I should be eatin' grits.

Does this mean you think I'm a fire ant???

Is this any way to treat a newcomer, a visitor, a friend_in_waiting???

Sheesh!

Oh, and on a more serious note :o We have recently had a problem with fire ants here in Queensland. The DPI (Department of Primary Industries) hit them pretty hard, and we had mandatory checking of properties (ALL of them, the WHOLE city) and baiting in any suspect suburbs. If they found a nest, they did that suburb and all surrounding suburbs. They are now down to a point where there are no known infestations, and are running a "Find the last Fire Ant" Campaign to drill them out once and for good!...
